Our sons 4th birthday was a Pirate themed party and my little brother was still in high school at the time. He went to the park beforehand and drew a very realistic map to the 'buried treasure' and marked it with a big red X that he had built. Our son STILL talks about this day, and he's 10 now. He had the time of his life following the map.. it took him about 45 minutes to do the whole thing, but he never asked for help once!
