All About Bergamot Essential Oil

Plus DIY Roller Remedy with Bergamot for Calming & Anxiety Relief

Bergamot essential oil, if you are unfamiliar with the name, is a citrus, known as “citrus bergamia” in its botanical name. It is a lovely scent, lighter than some citrus, and it has some wonderful health benefits in addition to its awesome aroma.

If you'd like to know more about doTERRA Bergamot essential oil or any oils please email us. You can find our contact info HERE.

Bergamot Essential Oil

Bergamot essential oil is described as being uplifting, assuring, restoring and calming. It has this complexity to it where it can calm you quickly but also uplift your mood, and not dampen it.It is an oil that, when used in a pure form, is safe for all common uses of an essential oil: topically, aromatically and internally. Just be sure you are using an oil that is 100% certified therapeutic grade, and not one that has been added to with fillers or perfumes. Their labels won't tell you if they have fillers, many will say 100% pure but they're not.  If they do not have third party testing available for the essential oil you're considering, move on to one that does.

Bergamot Essential Oil

Doterra’s Bergamot essential oil is safe for all of these and you can know you don’t need to worry about purity when you buy their oils, so this description of Bergamot is of their particular oil.

They do recommend for sensitive skin, to dilute when using it topically. As with any citrus, you want to be sure to use a carrier oil or lotion along with it when applying to the skin, and be sure not to go out in direct sunlight immediately after using it either, as citrus can cause skin irritation when overheated.

Their bergamot oil is taken from the rind of the fruit and cold pressed to extract the oils. This protects its valuable properties and keeps the aroma intact.

Its main constituents are: Limonene, Linalyl Formate, and Linalol. Its top properties are: Neutonic, Anti-inflammatory, antidepressant, antifungal and digestive.

You can see how valuable an oil it truly is when reading that list. It can be found in in Doterra’s Clary Calm women’s blend, and used in many other blends easily, as it blends well with many other oils.

Use it along with Ylang Ylang, Lavender, Patchouli, Elevation blend, White Fir, or Frankincense for a great combination. Bergamot may be best known for its use in Earl Grey tea, and it is many times combined with lavender in home recipes and drinks. An interesting fact about bergamot is that it was used in the very first “Eau De Cologne”.

To use in cooking and baking

Use one drop at a time but make sure it is not too strong as oils are more potent to use than herbs.

Put a drop in ice water for a refreshing drink, or in a hot tea for an Earl Grey flavor. Add a drop of lavender along with it in either one for an extra boost in flavor. Just be sure to stir well, as the oil tends to rise to the top.

Ingredients

Take a 10 ml. sized roller ball bottle and add in the following drops of essential oils:

  • 15 drops Bergamot
  • 18 drops Balance blend (If you do not have balance, use a woodsy oil such as cedarwood)
  • 10 drops White Fir
  • 12 drops Lavender

Instructions

  1. Go slowly when filling in the drops, as these are all thinner in consistency and it is easy to have the drops get away from you and use too many.
  2. Once you have them all in the bottle, top it off with your favorite carrier oil, such as jojoba or fractionated coconut oil. Fill it to the top of the main part of the bottle, stopping when it reaches the area that the lid screws on to, to avoid having it overflow when you place in the roller ball.
  3. Now, carefully push the roller ball down into the bottle, making sure it is all the way down and clicks in. If there is a gap between the plastic and the glass, it is not all the way on and it will leak.
  4. Once that is on, you can use the blend. Make yourself a label if desired.
  5. To use, just give it a shake before use and apply topically as needed. This blend is good for calming your mind and body and will leave you with an uplifted and calmed feeling instead of an anxious one.

Now you know of several ways to benefit from the use of Bergamot essential oil. I hope you give it a try and again remember to do your research on whatever oil you do buy.

  2. I didn't know that bergamot was used to make the first Eau De Cologne. We love our essential oils and have been using them for years. Once you learn how to use them it makes life so much easier and it's amazing how effective they are. I can't even remember the last time we have to buy over the counter drugs. Thanks for sharing the roll on recipe Michelle, I'm going to give it a try

  5. I didn't know bergamot oil had so many uses. As a tea drinker I've often had earl grey tea. It's one of my favorites. I probably wouldn't use it topically as I have extremely sensitive skin.

  10. I am new to essential oils and have a LOT to learn. I'm curious if any of these interact or give a reaction with pharmaceutical drugs? I'm keeping an open mind and want to try them.

    • You would have to check each drug with whatever essential oil you're thinking of using. You can ask your pharmacist or doctor. Lavender essential oil most likely doesn't interact with anything BUT always check with your doctor first if you're unsure.
