Benefits of Red Light Therapy with Joovv

Have you heard of red light therapy?

I admit I had not heard of red light therapy until I recently came in contact with the company Joovv and their Red Light Therapy machines and all they had to offer. I was intrigued as it can possibly help with many issues from reducing joint inflammation to reducing wrinkles, enhancing muscle recovery and more. As someone who has Rheumatoid Arthritis and is a woman in her 40s (sshh I don’t look a day over 32 ūüėČ ) I knew I had to find out more and give this red light therapy a try.

I admit until I did some more research I was worried that the Joovv Red Light Therapy unit would be some unwieldy monster that required a forklift to move around. Okay not quite but you get the idea, I was worried it would be too big and heavy for myself to move around. My fears were for naught as their regular sized red light therapy unit is light enough for me to move around when needed yet can treat almost my entire body in one treatment. I don’t know how much it weighs but¬†I can say I¬†can lift it when needed.

So How Does Red Light Therapy Work?

I’m not going to give you all of the technical 411 on red light therapy. You can check out the Joovv site for their thorough information on any question you can think of. If there’s not an answer I can confirm that if you contact them either by chat or email they will answer you quite quickly. I tested this by sending a question via chat. The chat was actually closed so I didn’t expect an answer right away but I had one within an hour via email. Color me impressed.

Here’s my Joovv Red Light Therapy Unit hanging on our door.

Red Light Therapy

So here’s some info on red light therapy for all of us newbies and get more detailed info on their site:

Once absorbed into your body, light energy is converted into cellular energy, which kicks off a series of metabolic events like the formation of new capillaries, elevated production of collagen, and the release of ATP.

Red light therapy has been approved by the FDA and its effectiveness has been studied throughout the world.  Red light in the mid-600 nm range, and near infrared light in the mid-800 nm range have been proven time and time again Рwhich is why we designed the Joovv Light to emit wavelengths in those ranges.

Why LED Light Therapy is Different

LEDs allow for more usable light because of their tight wavelength span. ¬†They generate very little heat and are incredibly durable. ¬†And because they’re so efficient, LEDs are considered more eco-friendly than incandescent or fluorescent sources. ¬†Without a doubt, LEDs are the preferred delivery mechanism for light therapy.

The Many Benefits of Red Light Therapy

There are so many proven benefits that it’s hard to list them all. ¬†But here are just a few. ¬†Red and near infrared light therapy has been clinically proven to:

  • Repairs sun damage
  • Reduces wrinkles
  • Enhances muscle recovery and peak performance
  • Heals acne and other blemishes
  • Fades scars and stretch marks
  • Speeds wound healing
  • Reduces joint inflammation
  • Increases testosterone production

Some tips and info for & from a first-time user of the Joovv Red Light Therapy Unit

Before I give you my opinion first let me share a few things with you. It’s easy to set up, you put the hook that goes over the top of the door, set up the pulley system and hang your unit. Turn on the power button and you’re ready to go. Our unit also came with a digital timer so you watch how long you’re utilizing the red light therapy.

Set it up where you’re good to have it hanging on a door.

They developed their devices with the latest LED technology. Rated to last over 50,000 hours, you won’t ever have to swap out our LEDs. Why change bulbs when you don’t have to.

I admit it was a major bonus for me to learn about the above. 50,000 hours and not having to ever change a bulb that works for me!

If you have sensitive eyes like I do put on sunglasses as the Joovv red light therapy unit lights are bright. Both my hubby and I did a collective whoa and shielded our eyes as we were taken by surprise. You DON’T need protective eyewear and apparently your eyes can also benefit from the red light therapy. I put the sunglasses on just because I found it bright but I’m also the person who wears her prescription glasses driving even on a cloudy day.

Give yourself at least 10 minutes per day with your Joovv Red Light Therapy unit.

Yes only 10 minutes or even less depending on what you want it to help you with. This busy working mama always puts getting things done ahead of helping herself but even I can spare 10 minutes a day for myself. It’s like my break from work which when you work from home it’s needed. I sometimes forget to eat lunch because I’m so busy working. Working from home isn’t always the paradise people think it is, we tend to work longer hours when we work for ourselves.

After you turn your Joovv unit off you’ll need a few seconds to have your eyes adjust to the regular lights. I found I saw dots just like the lights on the Joovv machine but 30 seconds later my eyes seem to have adjusted again.

Below is our unit turned on and I didn’t adjust the lighting of this photo. I wanted you to see how bright the room was with the red light therapy unit on.

This red light therapy unit does not come with a stand. As mentioned it has a pulley system but as a personal preference, I think it would be great to have a stand with it of some kind. That said we were able to lean it up against a wall too without any issues but since we have dogs, a cat and a teenager I don’t trust them not to bump into it. Okay, okay I don’t trust myself to not bump into it and knock it over.

Below on the left is the unit turned on with its full brightness. On the right, I adjusted the photo to tone down the brightness just so you could see the unit and the “red glow” if you will

You don’t/can’t adjust the “brightness” for those who are wondering. I’m going to assume that’s because you don’t want to mess with a good thing, just reap the benefits of using it.

What do I think of my Joovv Red Light Therapy Unit?

I’ve been using my Joovv red light therapy unit for several weeks now and at first I didn’t notice any difference. It was summer and with hot weather my joints always feel better. However, at one point I came to the realization that my skin was looking even better. I have rosacea and when it’s not acting up I have nice skin, not bragging I’m just lucky. However when the rosacea¬†flares I get lovely red bumps on my face that itch, oh joy. I didn’t have a single flare up of rosacea while I was¬†using the Joovv.

However, we had to go way unexpectedly¬†and sure enough while we were gone my rosacea flared up. Hmm coincidence? We were gone for a couple of weeks and I noticed more stiffness in my joints after about a week of being away. I hadn’t realized I had been feeling even better than usual until I went away and wasn’t using my Joovv red light therapy unit.

There are countless clinical studies have supported the use of red light therapy for Rheumatoid Arthritis and researchers have recommended it as an effective form of treatment. I had not heard that before from any of my doctors but I’m feeling how it works.

Red light works by targeting the pain and inflammation of arthritis. It helps this disease the same way it works with other conditions Рcells absorb wavelengths in the red and near infrared range, where the light is converted into cellular energy, which enables cells to function at a higher capacity. We’ve previously covered the mechanism of action for red light therapy in much greater detail.  But based on published clinical literature, it reduces the symptoms of arthritis, including pain, swelling, and stiffness.

This winter will be the big test as winter is always worse for me and my Rheumatoid Arthritis but I’m armed with the Joovv Red Light Therapy Unit. To find out more information on the studies of red light therapy and RA read this article HERE.

For those who might be wondering, I don’t find that it gets hot at all and when it’s turned on I can’t even hear the five fans that are on my unit. In fact you can listen for yourself on my video below.

I’m lucky to have this Joov Red Light Therapy unit and I am even happier that I will continue to get relief from my joint pain and rosacea. What’s not to love about that?!
