best medicine

Powered by Mom and family were lucky enough to receive an Oscar the Owl cool mist humidifier from the folks at Crane. I think many of you know by now that I prefer to use natural products whenever I can for my family and I. Whether it's the food we eat, the "medicines" we take or what we use to clean our home, whenever it's possible we like to go with natural products. We aren't 100% green or eat organic foods all the time or anything but we do what we can, when we can.

I also like to cut down on medications if it's reasonably possible to do so without making our health worse. I was so thrilled to get the Crane cool mist humidifier as I heard there were some health benefits to using one. I was surprised to learn that were even more benefits to a cool mist humidifier than I thought.

It's also good to know what is the difference between a cool mist and a warm mist humidifier?

Warm mist humidifiers produce a warm mist by boiling the water in the humidifier to produce steam.  Ultrasonic humidifiers generate a cool mist when a thin film of water is passed over a rapidly vibrating transducer.  The vibration breaks the water up into tiny droplets and emits a whisper quiet cool mist. I definitely prefer the cool mist humidifier to a warm mist one.

I did not realize until I read more information that the American Academy of Pediatrics actually recommends cool mist humidifiers along with saline nasal solutions and a nasal aspirator to help relieve the symptoms of colds and flus. In particular a cool mist humidifier helps to loosen nasal congestion, ease dry coughs, sooth itchy, dry skin, moisten chapped lips and prevent nosebleeds!

I don't know if it's because we've had the heat on more or if it's just the crazy weather we've been having but my lips even when indoors had kept getting chapped and we've been hit with a few more illnesses than we normally get. Usually my family and I stay quite healthy and don't get colds etc.. nearly as often with most people as I pack our food with antioxidant rich foods, we take immune boosting supplements etc.. However as mentioned we've fallen ill a few times this year but this last week it was my daughter and I again.

Fortunately this time we were armed with our Oscar the Owl cool mist humidifier and boy did he help us out! My daughter was hit first with a fever but shortly after she was really congested so we placed Oscar in her room and what a difference! The very next day her congestion was loosening up and the cough she had was not nearly as frequent. She was actually all better within about 5 days which is really good for my daughter.

When it was my turn Oscar was with me in my home office during the day while I worked and in my nightstand when I went to sleep. The first thing I actually noticed was I wasn't haven't to put lip balm on all the time like I have been for weeks now. I had  a very dry irritating cough which started to feel better once we started using our cool mist humidifier. I have to admit I didn't really think I'd feel the benefits of a cool mist humidifier so quickly. I hoped of course and knew it would help I just figured it would take a few days at least or longer. I'm happy to say the results were almost immediate. Of course I wasn't over my cold immediately, in fact as I write this I'm just starting to get over it but I know it would have taken much longer without Oscar our Crane cool mist humidifier.

My cough is better already but I've had that nagging dry cough many times in the past and it's always taken weeks to even get better, this is days and already I feel better woohoo.

As well I like to remind everyone with kids that the FDA and pediatricians recommend not giving over the counter cough and cold medicines to children under the age of 6. If you have to it's always best to talk to your doctor first. However you can help your little ones with their coughs and colds too with yes you got it a cool mist humidifier. You have everything to gain and nothing to lose by trying it out. Naturally this does not replace going to your doctor if your child is sick and needs medical attention. However it's a great idea and now it's an essential in my house to always have a Crane cool mist humidifier. I think Oscar needs a friend as my daughter is demanding I give Oscar back to her so I think I have to go and get another Crane Adorable :). They are also very reasonably priced and if you don't want an "Adorable" they have some nice looking drop humidifiers as well.

We give Crane cool mist humidifiers a big two thumbs up for style, ease of use and just making us feel better. Thanks Crane!

  1. I didn't know that it could prevent nosebleeds ... my husband sometimes wakes up with random ones so that would be extremely helpful!

  2. Great review! I've got a type of asthma called cough-variant asthma, and it sounds like a cool-mist humidifier would be a great help. Thanks for all the information.

  3. I really didn't know that there were actually two kinds of humidifiers...warm mist and cool mist, and that there was a really big difference between them. Also, I knew that humidifiers helped with coughs and nasal congestion, but I didn't know that they helped to prevent nosebleeds! Thanks for the great review!!

  12. I've never used a cool mist humidifier before. My family has also been sick more often this year. I borrowed my mom's warm mist humidifier, but it didn't seem to help that much. I've learned a lot from your review. Now I want a cool mist humidifier!

  20. I didn't realize there were warm and cool mist humidifiers and what the benefits of each were. It seems the cool mist will alleviate most of my winter symptoms but i remember my Mom putting a pot of water on the radiator to moisten the air in the room so we were stuffed up our nasal and mouth passages wouldn't dry out. I really need to get a humidifier and a crane would be nice b/c they are functional and freakin' adorable!

  21. I really think with the way it can help prevent dryness, it would benefit me with all my sinus issues I have. Not sure what it is but since my sister moved, there has been a lot of colds, and flu like symptoms here. They even had the home checked for black mold but maybe here in Florida, this is something we all would benefit from

  23. I didn't even know there was such a thing as a cool mist humidifier. We've always used our clunky old steam humidifier whenever trying to soothe a cold and worried about knocking it over the whole time, but now that I know cool mist is better and it can be delivered by something so compact (and cute to boot), I'll be looking into Crane's Cool Mist Humidifiers. Thanks for the review! <3

  28. Our family has had the sore throat and cold since January and it seems we just keep passing it back and forth. There are so many times this year that we've needed a humidier. Every time I ran to the store to purchase one, they were all out. I would love to try one of these.
