Powered by Mom brings you a Garmin Vivosmart Activity Tracker Review

The Garmin Vivosmart Activity Tracker is so much more than an activity tracker. It also acts as a smartwatch and has an impressive list of features. If you've been looking for a wearable tech device that has an impressive list of features, will track your activities, is light and comfortable then look no further the Garmin Vivosmart could be what you're looking for!

Garmin Vivosmart

I've been trying to increase my daily physical activity so I was more than happy to say yes when the opportunity came along to review the Garmin Vivosmart activity tracker. I received the black one in large, normally I would take a small size band as I have very small hands, seriously my hands are quite small, I fit into children's gloves. However, I wanted the option of my husband being able to wear the Garmin Vivosmart as well so that he too could test it out and to get him more active too.

As you may be aware Garmin is known for the high quality GPS units and now they're moving to the wearables tech area and in my opinion they're off to a good start. The large size band did surprisingly fit both my husband and myself. I had to put it on the last natch but it was a good fit, not snug but not loose that it would move around a lot and it definitely would not come off. It fit like I would want my watch to fit on my wrist.

Here it is on hubby's wrist.

Garmin Vivosmart

Here it is on my wrist and see it fits and there's nothing sticking out, not too snug or loose.

The other side of the band.

Garmin Vivosmart

Here's a picture of both of our hands so you can get an idea of how it fits on different size wrists.

Garmin Vivosmart

It is a slim flexible band that is similar to many of the activity tracker bands you've seen out there but it also has a hidden display. All you have to do is double tap the 1.35 x 0.14-inch, 128 x 16 resolution display to reveal the time and date and from there you can check your activity and more. You can also set up the Garmin Vivosmart display to activate when you raise your hand. I prefer to do the double tap. It's a bright OLED touchscreen and it is tiny as it's of course limited to the band, however I didn't find it difficult to see.

Garmin Vivosmart

Unfortunately I found it hard to capture the lighted display on my photos. There's a slight blur from the lights, this is not how it looks when you're looking directly onto the display, it is quite clear. The Garmin Vivosmart is also waterproof up to 5 atm so theoretically you can wearing it while swimming or in the shower. I haven't test out that particular theory yet.

If you look in the reflection you can see that the text is clear which is how the display actually is 🙂

Garmin Vivosmart

To charge it you have to plug it into a clamp and that plugs into an USB, it's easy to do but a bit awkward. I think the next upgrade of this great device would be able to just plug the unit directly. One of the features I find that I use daily besides checking my step count is using the vibrating silent alarm feature.

Here's the clamp you have to use to charge the Garmin Vivosmart

IMG_3431

It's easy enough to put on but I think it's one of the few things they can improve upon on the next model 🙂

IMG_3432 I use the silent alarm for those 5am mornings I have to get up, it wakes me up but no one else. I also use it for reminders throughout the day, it's extremely useful along with the "move bar". If you've been inactive too long which in my case usually means working away on my computer you'll get a notification to well get up and moving. It occurs if you've been inactive for an hour, you'll get a gentle vibration on your write and onscreen it will say "move". This is now a must have for me as I get so busy working that I forget to get up and stretch my legs and walk around. We need to get away from those computers more often and now with the Garmin Vivosmart you can!

Garmin heart rate

This particular Garmin Vivosmart also comes with a heart rate monitor, that's an added bonus. It doesn't go on your wrist though of course it's worn across your chest. I admit though I haven't gotten into this yet as I've only had my Garmin Vivosmart for a short time so I'm working my way up to it. It's a bonus though and I'm thrilled it's included.

There are way too many features on the Garmin Vivosmart to go over but my favorite ones are as follows:

  • Displays steps, calories, distance and time of day
  • Vibration alerts for calls, texts and emails from your smartphone
  • Easy operation using touch and swipe
  • Inactivity alert reminds you to move
  • Auto goal keeps you challenged

The Vivosmart comes in all black but you can also select ones with an underside color of mauve, violet, dusty blue or gray.

vivosmart-family

  • Vivosmart features a sleek, invisible display that comes to life when you get a notification or when you give the band a tap. Then the OLED display shines through the band to reveal your steps, distance traveled, calories burned, time of day and more.
  • Up to 7 days of battery life and I can say yes it did last 7 days which is far better than a Fitbit I've tried.
  • On-device data fields/screens - Daily step count, goal countdown, inactivity timer, distance, calories, time of day/date, heart rate, bike speed, VIRB action camera/remote, music player controls
  • History - Stores up to 3 weeks of 24/7 activity data on device between syncs, or up to 2 weeks if a heart rate monitor is used 1 hour per day
  • Supports heart rate and heart rate zone - Yes (when used with an ANT+ heart rate monitor)

Overall I love the convenience of having a smartwatch activity tracker. I don't have to keep looking at my phone for either the time or to see if I'm meeting my activity level goals. I can set reminders, check my notifications and more I haven't even had a chance to try. The Garmin Vivosmart has a lot of features packed into this wearable device and I look forward to figuring them all out if hubby doesn't claim it has his own first!

  1. I learned that you can mute the Garmin so that when you are walking around and don't want it to share the information that it can be silenced on-demand.

  2. I like the get up and move reminder every hour, but I'm with you on the heart monitor part I don't think I would want to use it. I also noticed the plug in part did look awkward, so hopefully they will improve it.

  4. Oh I love this! This will be great for my husband who is using a pedometer that just tracks how many steps he's taken. So many great features to this Garmin Vivosmart Activity Tracker...water-proof, little reminders to get up and move, clear LED display. I just can't say enough about it!

  6. I knew they made GPS units; I had no idea that they made these. I like that they are 5-ATM safe; not only great for showers, but you can track swimming distances, too. Also like the blank display that only shines when you have something to see.

  7. Wow, I love that this is adjustable. I too have very skinny wrist (when wrapping my fingers around (thumb and index) they pretty much overlap). Other features I like: the silent alarm and the reminder to get off your butt!

Thank you for reviewing there is so much on the market now a days it can all get confusing.

  10. Thanks for the review Michelle. I have Fibromyalgia and one of the worse things for me body is being inactive for too long, (like sitting at the computer or laying in bed) so I love the alarm that tells you to move! Plus being able to wear it when it's raining out. I would have no more excuses.

I Had never ever heard of this item before you posted about it.
Looking at the photo, I'd think it was nothing but a watch strap. And then hearing all that it does makes me think it is so complicated. But then your review simplifies a bit. Fantastic that you use iti and hubby

I have to start walking again, although I now have to use a walker. This would be so perfect for me. Happy Easter to you & your family 🙂

  16. My doctor recently strongly recommended that I become more active and eat healthier foods. The reminders to move would really help me since I easily spend 6 hours in a row on my tablets, yet I'm always shocked by the number of hours that have elapsed! The heart rate monitor would be great too!

Also, I would LOVE the silent alarm on the Garmin. My dog goes berserk when the alarm clock next to my bed goes off, Garmin would make my life easier, every single morning. And I love the frequent reminders to get up and move: it's so easy to get lost into computer screens and TV screens.

    Thanks!

  59. Honestly Michelle, you had me after the first paragraph: before you even got to all the features and benefits of the products or even a description of what it actually is/ suppose to be and do ~ much less your review/assessment of how well it performed or if you would recommend it ~ and if so, how enthusiastically...

You see my husband and I had already been talking about how each of us really needed some product or system that would allow us to self-monitor our inner health goings on and improve our wellness/fitness strategies. (in recent years we have both been battling some serious medical conditions.) We already agreed upon the need and that we didn't want to buy something on the cheap ~ the major obstacle was that we figured we'd have to buy TWO and that was going to be a problem given our current austerity budget.

And like with you and yours, my guy's hands and arms are A LOT bigger than mine (we had to get two different blood pressure/heart rate monitors too) ~ so when you got right to the point that you two could share ONE despite the considerable size differences (thanks aside from your words ~ the photos too helped me get a better sense of sizes and fit ~ thanks.) I'm going to share your review with my honey he'll want to do a bit more research ~ but I think you've helped find the solution. (For me especially the hourly nag when I'm putting in long hours on the computer would be a real godsend (and possibly a lifesaver) ~ sometimes I get so engrossed in my work that I can lose track of time ~ for hours...

  89. I've been wanting an activity tracker, and I love my Garmin GPS. I'm glad that they've decided to enter this wearable tech market! In the past I would've had my husband wear the Vivosmart because he'd get up at 3:30 a.m. Now he's in the hospital with a bad work injury, so when he finally comes home, I'll be the one who needs a silent alarm! We're going to have to completely change our lifestyle too, so I could really use a feature like the "move bar." I'd be content to sit around all day, so any little reminder would be great to help me motivate!

  103. love the pictures so I can see how it fits on your smaller wrist and the brightness of the display. I didn't know about the hidden display feature that is pretty cool. I didn't see it in the review, but does it come with the little band so it can't come up clasped?

  104. WOW! I really enjoyed reading your Terrific Review on Garmin Vivosmart Activity Tracker! This device sounds really neat! I love that it keeps track of all the things you do! Also, I like the fact that it will tell you to get moving after an hour! It's terrific as well that it has a silent alarm to either wake you up for you to get going or for any other different reason you set it for! This is a great product! Thanks so much for sharing your Terrific Review, the pictures, and all the personal and professional information about the Garmin Vivosmart Activity Tracker with all of us! I honestly do appreciate it! Thanks again! Michele 🙂
