 Educate Support Advocate

Autism-Awareness-Button

Every year thousands of children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and forms of it such as Asperger Syndrome. A definitive cause of Autism has yet to be found.

April is Autism Awareness Month. It's a time that we can support someone or families of individuals with Autism. Educate others on Autism awareness. Advocate for individuals who are on the Autism spectrum. AutismSpeaks.org gives an abundance of information such as this:

Autism statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identify around 1 in 68 American children as on the autism spectrum–a ten-fold increase in prevalence in 40 years. Careful research shows that this increase is only partly explained by improved diagnosis and awareness. Studies also show that autism is four to five times more common among boys than girls. An estimated 1 out of 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States.

A group of us have gotten together to spread the word about Autism Awareness and we'd like you to do the same. To promote Autism Awareness Month we're giving away the items below.

 Prize 1: $25 Amazon.com Gift Card

  1. Autism costs a family $60,000 a year on average?! Holy cow. My cousin's son, Luke has autism, & I never thought about how much of a financial burden it could have on them.

  2. I could say that autism is more common in boys then girls. However, I already know this as both my brothers have extremely severe cases of autism. My one brother is 18 mo mentally and the other is 2 years mentally. I am glad there is awareness and support for this that affects my family so deeply.

  6. I learned that boys are more like to be affected than girls. And I will always remember that just because someone has autism doesn't mean their less than other people they are just unique

  7. I learned that about 40 percent of people with Autism have average to above average intellectual abilities. I feel that there is usually a huge misconception about this. People usually think that if an individual doesn't respond in a nuero-typical fashion, then they are less smart than their peers. So NOT true!

  9. I learned that if you suspect anything you can contact your state’s Early Intervention Services department about getting your child screened for autism.

  10. I learned that you can reduce the risk of having a child with autism by taking prenatal vitamins or having a diet with folic acid. I did not know that.

  11. With the May 2013 publication of the DSM-5 diagnostic manual, all autism disorders were merged into one umbrella diagnosis of ASD.

  12. The thing that amazes me the most is how far they have come in diagnosing this disease. My son is now 23 but when he was little, the doctors thought he had this disorder. Now I wonder if maybe he has a form of it that they didn't know about back then.

  13. I learned that the most obvious signs of autism and symptoms of autism tend to emerge between 2 and 3 years of age.

  14. I learned that many ones on the autism spectrum have distinctive abilities, but atypical ways of viewing the world, and that only about 25 percent of individuals with ASD are nonverbal.

  18. I didn't realize how common autism is, or that it affects more boys than girls. My husband's niece has autism, and I really hope more research can be funded to help those who are affected.
