As a teenager, I wrote an essay (not for school; just because I wanted to) for a coach who became one of my best friends.
I was a gymnast with a love for the sport. But I had a double lapse of a flare from an autoimmmune disease had multiple surgeries. then long term medications that kept me out of the gym. However, small and handicapped version of the spot had to be for me when I returned, I did it for the love of it, and I asked one of my favorite coaches to be my private coach.
He is a quadriplegic, shoulders down coach. I always admired him; he was so positive and enthusiastic, but I never knew why he was quadriplegic. After we grew closer and closer, he told me his story. I wrote an essay telling his story and about why I cherished his friendship and bravery. I also then composed a violin piece for his story and performed.

The first teacher who I ever truly connected with and had that feeling that a teacher saw potential in me was when I was in sixth grade. My teacher’s name was Mr. Rumfelt. In that year, he saw potential in me that no other teacher had ever pointed out. He had me tested for AG (what it used to be called way back in the day…Academically Gifted). I hit new reading levels and found a love I never had before.
My grandmother passed away when I was in Mr. Rumfelt’s class. He’s the one that took me into the hallway to tell me. He was better than any Guidance Counselor would have been. These are things that have stuck with me for 30+ years. Sixth grade was an eternity ago!
