Powered by Mom Blog is now addicted pot roasts!
So if I love pot roasts so much why do I have a picture of a sandwich, don't you worry I'll tell you soon enough it's part of the reason I'm now addicted to pot roasts 🙂
Believe it or not I just started to make pot roasts this year and more so since the cold weather started to arrive. Oh my I never knew how easy and how much you could do with all the pot roast recipes out there and all the meals you can create with one pot roast! That's where the sandwich picture above comes in, that sandwich is made from the beef of a pot roast recipe the same recipe, well almost the same recipe that I tried this week.
For those of you who are not pot roast newbies like me you're probably not surprised to hear how much I'm loving pot roasts and how versatile a meal it can be. I was surprised to find out that 65% of Canadians don't know the difference between a pot roast and an oven roast so if you didn't know that's okay you're in good company. They are as the names imply one is cooked in a pot and the other in the oven. I don't know why I haven't done any pot roasts in the past considering that beef is the absolute favourite source of protein in my house. I admit it we love it all steaks especially of course, ground beef for spaghetti sauces and tacos and roasts of all kinds but usually before it was always oven roasts.
If you don't know how to cook a pot roast check out the Canadian Beef website HERE they have some great tips and step by step instructions too!
I've only made one kind of pot roast up until now and it was a basic meat and potatoes one with some spices of course, it's very tasty and everyone including my picky eater of a daughter loves it so that's another reason I'm so happy to have found more pot roast recipes and a few spin offs too. This week the pot roast recipe I decided to try was the Slow-Cooker South-Western Pulled Beef which can be found along with several other yummy looking recipes at Canadian Beef HERE.
Here's a quick look at my pot roast after I browned the roast and before we turned on the slow cooker
You can get the recipe for the South-Western Pulled Beef above where I mentioned it earlier just click on the link but I will mention that I made a few modifications based on family preferences and the fact that I didn't have tomato paste on hand which was in the recipe. I thought I had bought everything but alas no tomato paste. This probably one of the reasons my pot roast had more of a gravy like a stew but also because I added extra beef broth. My whole family loves having that extra sauce to poor on things and to dip bread in so extra broth was added.
I also added in carrots and potatoes that the recipe did not call for because again my family just loves those and I thought why not. This recipe has so much flavor when it started to simmer the house smelled so good. I actually put it on at night time around 8:30pm on low in the slow cooker (the recipe says 8-10 hours) so that by 7:30am the next morning our house smelled delicious! It was perfect to do it this way as I pulled apart the beef which pretty much fell apart and scooped some up and put it in a thermos for my daughter's lunch at school that morning. She loved it and told me her friends wanted some too. It's a comfort food and perfect for this time of the year however this pot roast keeps on giving.
Here's the pot roast with all the goodies done the next morning and after I pulled the beef that fell apart so easily
Today I used some of the leftovers for my pulled beef sandwich, I had it on a yummy bun and for me because this recipe is so delicious (remember the full recipe is on the clickable link a few paragraphs above) I didn't need anything except a little butter on the bun and I dipped my sandwich in the gravy. Oh my goodness that was the best lunch so tasty and so easy to throw together!
The picture can't begin to tell you how tasty this sandwich was and the pot roast itself of course. Between the onion soup and cumin this recipe is very flavourful but better yet it's so easy to do. Just brown the roast and throw all the ingredients into the slower cooker and besides stirring once you leave it for the 8-10 hours to create a yummy tasting meal that can become other meals! So far we have the pot roast and the pulled beef sandwiches but you can also take the pulled beef and make a Mexican Shepherd's pie. I'm going to try that next if you want to see all the options of what you can do with the pulled beef and again the link for the recipe just click HERE.
The next recipe I want to try from their site is the Slow Cooker Marvelous Mushroom Pot Roast it looks and sounds marvelous indeed, here's a picture of it that I grabbed from their site. Doesn't it look delicious?
While I'm loving all of these pot roast/slow cooker recipes that are perfect for this time of year I think that I would enjoy many if not all of these recipes all year long. Better yet pot roast cooking is quite healthy when you think about it, I've put vegetables in mine, seasoning, my roast had next to no fat on it and yet it was absolutely delicious. I can't wait to do the mushroom pot roast next week 🙂
Tell me what's your favorite way to cook a roast I'd love to hear about it comment below!

This post was part of a Canadian beef Blogger's event however this did not in any way influence my opinion, we truly enjoyed our pot roasts.
I haven't made a pot roast in ages, and wowie, this sure has me now writing down on my grocery list what I need. I like the extra sauce, carrots and potatoes, too. I'm sure it will be a big hit.
I love pot roast. The recipe pictures you shared makes me hungry. I will have to check out the Canadian site you shared soon
My family loves pot roast. I can't wait to give this a try. Thank you so much for sharing
WOW! We just love pot roasts too! I love to cook it in the crockpot with the veggies just like you did. We generally have that one night with a salad for dinner. The next night, with the left overs, we make what my husband calls "pot pie", however, it's not a pie at all! It's actually homemade noodles (which are more like dumplings to me). I put the pot roast back in the crockpot along with the vegetables (if I need more veggies, I'll usually boil them in beef boulion on the stove to get soft and put them into the crockpot!). We take an awful lot of the "beef juice" and place it in a big boiling pan. We have to get the juice to boil. I make the dough and roll it out and then cut it into strips about 1/4 inch thick. Then from the strips, I cut them into a little over an inch in length. They are put into the boiling juice to cook through. Once they are done cooking, everything is added together and we enjoy another night of pot roast, vegetables and dumplings! So Yummy!!!! Generally there is only a little bit to warm up the next day for a lunch. However, with the problems we've been having financially, We have not had a good pot roast or "pot pie" in what seems like forever!!!! I can't wait until my hubby's doctor tells him he can go back to work! Maybe after a while of him working, we can afford to purchase some good meat for a change!!!! Thanks so much for sharing your recipes with all of us! Pot Roasts are the best to do an awful lot with! Thanks again, Michele 🙂
this looks really good. we love pot roast.
i love a good roast and usually end up making stew or bar-b-que with the leftovers. Now i'm hungry. 🙁 LOL

I could eat roast everyday. You can do so much with the leftovers. That's one meal we never gave to throw out.
I love trying new recipes. Thanks for sharing this!
Wow! That looks so good!!! I love, Love, LOVE pot roast!! Thanks for sharing!
My hubby is a huge pot roast fan - whether it be a true "pot roast" or eye of round....the cheapest cuts seem to have the best flavor, he says. And he is the one that cooks them!
We have a daughter whose nickname is sandwich. Can you guess why?I have copied this down because it looks delicious and she will love it.Thank you.
This looks extremely tasty. I've saved it thank you so much for posting, looks like dinner tomorrow!!
This pot roast sandwich looks so yummy. I love using a slow cooker because that is less time on my feet cooking and a hot dinner is ready at the end of a long day of running errands! Thanks for the recipe ideas.
I have 2 slow cookers in the top of my closet under so much other stuff that I haven't found the time to try and take it out because I'd have too much stuff to sort once I did. So..I make my pot roast similar to yours except for the cumin and I add extra garlic & onions for flavor. I sear the meat then plop all the ingredients into a large pot and once it comes to boiling, I lower the temp, cover and let simmer for around 4-5 hours. just till i can pull apart the roast easily.
I love pot roast put of a wheat slice of bread with gravy smothered over all

You have a lot of great ideas for pot roast that makes it change taste a little. Thank you. jerri Davis
I love pot roast. The sandwich looks so yummy.
I LOVE pot roast and all of it's wonderful left over possibilities! I've never been able to bring myself to add coleslaw to a sandwich, though. I may have to try that one of these times!
Great recipe-my mom cooks pot roast in the oven in a big pan w/potatoes, carrots & celery-yum!
Your sandwich has become one of my favorites. Thanks!
so glad you liked it Jane! It is delicious 🙂
I've never been a huge fan of pot roast. But if the gravy tastes as good as it looks, I'm sold!
I've always liked to cook a large pot roast with the intention of using the cooked meat for several meals.
I don't know if I ever tried pot roast but I think I will try it now. Thanks
I Love Pot Roast as well, usually just making the basic with potatoes and carrots. The whole family enjoys that meal. Thanks for the new ideas and recipes, I'm definately going to tried some of them!! Yummy!!

You have opened my eyes to a whole new pot roast world. Going to try many new recipes now!!
this looks delicious - will have to try it when the pot roast is on sale at the local grocery store. thank you for the great tips. ( :
I have a few different recipes but they all use the crockpot!
I always find pot roast on sale at the store so this is a great read for me so I can get more ideas.
Thank you
I also love pot roast in the crock pot - easy peasy and leftovers make great sandwiches and soup.
I will have to share this recipe with my cousin. She love pulled pork but I think beef would be better for her.
That sandwich looks as good as can be. I know my grown children would love it with some hot sauce.
I love pot roast as well. The thing we do after I make a roast is, we separate the meat from the veggies and warm it in a skillet, then add BBQ sauce. We then get sub sandwich buns and have BBQ beef sandwiches. I also like to take the roast with all the veggies and warm it up and then add a bit of rice to it and bake some dinner rolls. Roast is so yummy I even make it in the summer 😉
I usually cook mine in the crockpot, set it and forget it!!
We cook a lot of our roasts in the crock pot (both beef & pork). One of the ways that we do it is to slice up some onions and lay them in the bottom of the crock pot. Then season the roast with salt & pepper & brown it. Then place it on top of the onions. Add about a cup of bbq sauce of choice over top the roast. Add some more liquid (as in water or broth) if you think there is not enough liquid in the crock pot. Cook until done (about 4-5 on high to 7-8 on low). Shred and serve in buns, over rice, etc.
This looks delicious! I will have to make it!
Ok thanks a lot, You just made me really hungry...:) I love roast and this looks great !
It looks scrumptious and good idea to try for a change of pace at mealtime!
I had to laugh when I read your article, "Addicted to Pot Roast"! You sound like my daughter! She is always working or in school, so she doesn't have much time for cooking. So, when I taught her how to make Pot Roast in the Crock Pot, and she realized it was a one pot deal and that it would be ready when she got home, well she was "addicted" immediately! She is an expert at it now, and has tried many other recipes. My granddaughter, who doesn't like many vegetables asks for Pot Roast all the time now!
You are going to LOVE the Mushroom Pot Roast! My family love it! Pot Roasts are so versatile and forgiving! You can put whatever types of veggies in them that you like. I like that you can use a cheap cut of meat and it will turn out so tender and delicious. My granddaughter likes to eat the pot roast on toast in the morning for breakfast! LOL I have made it without tomato paste and have substituted fresh or canned tomatoes and it has turned out fine. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post and I am also gonna try your different recipes! I like switching things up and trying new recipes! Thanks!
thank you Suzanne 🙂 I can't wait to make the mushroom one 🙂
It has been tradition down through my Mom's side of the family that Sunday was just automatically pot roast night (being English/ Welsh and all) and I have tried keeping that alive. I have two sons so I am not quite sure if that will carry on or not (I hope so)!
that sandwich looks so yummy , i love how you added coleslaw 😉 Thanks for sharing @tisonlyme143
That looks delicious!!!
talk about yummy, i love being able to do so many things with a pork roast. and even in the summer time i enjoy cooking some on the grill 🙂 Thanks for sharing
Never thought about making sandwiches from leftove pot roast meat (pork or beef)! I will have to try that next time!
That sandwich looks AMAZING!! Next to steak, beef roast is one of my very favorites. I love using the crock pot, it makes life so much easier. My newest addiction though is the pressure cooker - same results as the crock pot in a fraction of the time. Great for those days when you forget to load the crockpot in the morning. Thanks for the ideas!
I've always made pot roasts. I live in FL so pot roast is an every week staple. Though I haven't tried a sandwich like you have pictured. Is that Cole Slaw? I love Cole Slaw but never thought to put it on my pot roast sandwich. I'll have to try that. Thanks for the idea =D
This looks so yummy! I also love pot roast and finding new recipes to try.....Thanks!
The sandwich looks wonderful! My DH would love it :).Anything you did with a beef roast you can also do with pork.I love adding root vegetables to mine during the winter.
thanks a lot, now I'm starving! lol
My family loves roast, but for some reason I havent made it in a while, thanks for the reminder, time to dig out the old crock pot!
I never had a bad roast beef. The mushroom beef looks delicious! I could have beef everyday and be happy.
wow this looks so good, im going to make this
One of my favorite things to do with pot roast is simply to sear off the outsides first, then put in the crock pot with a can of coke. Yup, one can of coke. That's it. Turn on the crock pot and walk away. When it's done...serve it up. Yummy!
i love pot roast because of the leftovers. i love to use it to replace ground beef in my pasta sauce. its so good!
You have motivated me to get my slow cooker out! I never seem to have enough time to cook a really complete meal for the family....and there are so many options here with just a simple pot roast. Thank you!
you are welcome and good luck Cindy 🙂
I have been looking for a good recipe like this for so long. Missing my mom's and hoping to make this next time I get a chance.
I make a pot roast with the mushrooms and Campbells golden mushroom soup, french onion soup and a can of beef broth... we have pot roast the first night, beef pot pie or sandwiches the second night, if it makes it to a third night...I chop it up and add it to a beef barley soup...and I usually try to stagger it so we aren't eating beef every night. I tend to make more than one roast at a time so I can pop one in the freezer in slices with broth/gravy...very handy to have on hand when there is no time to even get the crock pot together...and I need the kids to start dinner 🙂
I enjoy a pot roast with added celery. It adds enough of a taste without overpowering and if you dont like to eat celery you can pick it out.
Thanks so much for the recipe and tips. Love the crock pot, especially when the weather is cold and you work during the week:)
Looks so yummy
That looks very good I will have to try it
I am so making this recipe this week!! Thank you for sharing!! And I love your page!!
Thanks Tammy and let me know how you like it 🙂 and welcome!
Thank you so much for the link to that site! So many wonderful recipes and the mushroom pot roast looks fantastic. So does the sandwich! I can't wait to try them.
I know they all look so yummy 🙂
I love pot roasts too! My family loves for me to make hot roast beef sandwiches with the left over shredded meat. I make brown gravy, boil some onion (sliced into rings) in butter & water until tender, put the shredded meat on an open faced hamburger bun, top with the brown gravy and onions. Serve with french fries & we love the gravy on our fries too!!!
I have never had Pot roast but it looks delish!! Thanks!
I love pot roast... but have never cooked one myself (eyes down cast...I am so ashamed!) You are right it is truly comfort food! My mom always made fabulous pot roasts and I am sitting here wondering how in the world I could have been married as long as I have and never made one!!! That sandwich looks absolutely delicious and not I feel the need to cook a pot roast!!!
I love pot roasts too! They're so delicious and easy to make in the crock pot! I've made the pulled beef/pork sandwiches before and they are heavenly! Now you're pic is making me want to make it tonight lol, thanks for sharing!
And the leftover ideas are endless - thanks for sharing!
Thanks for posting this! When I went to the store tonight I almost bought a pot roast but then realized I hadn't made one in so long I wanted to research some recipes first. Thanks for the ideas!
so welcome Chrissy let us know which one you try 🙂
I love pot roast especially with potatoes!
I absolutely love pot roasts and cooking with my crockpot. The beef comes out so tender and it melts in your mouth. Yum!
I never ate very much meat until I discovered pot roasts. They are my new favourite food. Tip- Try pulled pork pizza next time you have leftovers. I use BBQ sauce instead of pizza sauce. I assemble the pizza and let it sit in the fridge overnight. (If you do not let it sit in the fridge over night assembled it just does not taste right)
Yummy. I love this. Cannot wait to make my own pot roast Sammie. Thanks so much
Wow! It never occurred to me to use the beef for sandwiches. I ususally make a pot roast and we eat the left overs but it's a great idea to turn the left overs into a different meal! Thank you for the idea I am off to write down the recipe.

We love using the slow cooker to make beef barbeque for sandwiches. We also make beef stew, stroganoff, vegetable beef soup, stir fry, beef tips, and shredded beef for Mexican dishes like burritos.
that looks mouth watering I would love to make that for my family sometime
Never thought about putting left over potriast on a bun. I do pulled pork sandwhiches all the time. Will need to try this out next time I cook a roast.
There are so many recipes you can make from a good beef or pork or venison pot roast. I make chili, strogonaff, fajitas, pulled pork, stew, stir fry, shish kabobs and many more. I even grind it up for ground chuck, beef, venison and pork when it's on sale for recipes and sausage making.
I love pot roast and this looks and sounds delish!
This looks so good! I love pot roast!
I have always loved a good pot roast and there are just so many ways you can use the left overs. I make enchiladas, burritos, sandwiches, (including open face) and soups with my leftovers. Yummers!
