The Benefits of Being an Excellent Reader

There are many ways that children benefit from having excellent reading skills. For one, they are able to read a variety of materials. So, besides being able to read the latest popular novel, they can also read newspaper articles, periodicals, Internet articles and other works of non-fiction. They have the tools to be able to read what they need to in order to complete a homework assignment or school project. Consider some other ways that children benefit from having excellent reading skills.

A Better Vocabulary

When kids have excellent reading skills they are constantly adding to their vocabulary. For instance, a child who challenges him or herself with more difficult reading material learns a gathering of unfamiliar words along with their definitions. Consequently, when the child sees one of these words in another piece of reading material, he or she is able to understand its meaning.

Increased Confidence

A child with excellent reading skills can build on that foundation by taking on more challenges. A kid who reads at a sixth grade level can go on to try reading material meant for seventh graders. In short, every time a child is able to read and understand an entire book, article or other written piece, he or she gains more confidence. An educator who would like to boost the reading skills of his or her students may want to consider a program like Journeys: A Path to Balanced Literacy.

Exposure to New Topics May Lead to a Future Career

Finally, a child with excellent reading skills is able to read about may different topics. For instance, a child who reads about spiders may be inspired to read about the work of an entomologist. This may inspire the child to pursue a career in entomology one day.

  1. I have good reading skills because I went to college and learned a lot about reading and the skills I need to make it in college by reading a lot of the books that are required. That is why it is so important to get kids to read at a young age, and get them to love it. My Mom always read to me and took me to the library and instilled a love of reading.
