It's finally time to think about summer so we're starting to work on sprucing up the backyard

For us a big part of getting our backyard ready for summer is doing clean up. From picking up whatever has blown into the yard over winter and spring to doing some yard work. Another big component is using some elbow grease and to just get down to cleaning.

This is part of our backyard with the treehouse my hubby built for our daughter. You can see why I'd like to enjoy it this summer.

If you’ve visited your local home and garden store in the last few weeks, you likely noticed that the seasonal aisle is stocked full of BBQs, patio furniture and oh-so-fabulous backyard lounge chairs. Tempting as it is to toss out the old stuff that’s been sitting in your garage all winter – or worse, taking a beating outdoors for the past few months – a few simple, budget-friendly tips and tricks will help to make everything old look new again.

  • Make old, new again. There’s nothing worse than removing your patio furniture cushions from storage and realizing they’re all stained. Before you think about tossing them, give them a clean. Mix OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover with water and let the cushion covers soak for 1 to 6 hours, depending on the severity of the stain. Wash as normal and your cushions should come out stain-free and looking brand new.

Here's what my favourite outdoor chair looked liked after going through our winter. It was covered but it still gets stained. So I did the tip above as I know how well this one works. I got out the OxiClean and took a sponge to it. I didn't actually have to soak the material, I just scrubbed with the diluted OxiClean and it came out beautifully.

So how well does the OxiClean Stain remover work? Take a look below and judge for yourself but I'd have to say it's a total win!

  • Win the weeding war. Did you know that watering your weeds makes it easier to pull them out? If it hasn’t rained in a few days, water your weeds before yanking them. Fun fact: If the soil is moist, you are also less likely to disturb any plants nearby.
  • Save with a little scrubbing. There’s a simple solution for removing dirt, grime and stains from patio furniture and even your deck. Mix OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover with water (following the instructions on the package) and apply the solution to almost anywhere. Let stand for a few minutes and scrub as needed. It will leave everything looking neat and clean again.

I know I made you scroll a bit to see the finished photo 😉 Looks good doesn't it?!

  • Wheel your way to wonderful. Re-arranging rather than replacing is also a good way to give new life to your backyard. Consider moving planters and patio furniture to different spots within your space to give it a wonderful new look and feel. Remember, you’re not alone when moving heavy items like lounge chairs… there are wheels to help! Wheeling your furniture around doesn’t eliminate all the hard work but will put less strain on your back.

Another way I start to spruce up the backyard for summer - I put together my own hanging baskets.

Be prepared that after a weekend of weeding and wheeling, your back, arms, legs – yes, your whole body – may be aching with pain. Make sure you leave yourself enough time on Sunday evening for a warm bath and a few hours curled up with a good book or movie. Before going to bed, rub and soothe your sore muscles (all of them!) with Rub A535 Extra Strength Heating Cream. The best things about this product is that it works fast and is non-greasy so you can put it on right before going to bed and it won’t stain your sheets. I love the Rub A535 it really does help with sore muscles and absorbs quickly into the skin.

  1. I reuse, repurpose and make new again if possible. We go to sales and such to find things we need for our yard. I would love to have a deck or something but our yard / house doesnt lend itself to it.

  2. What a difference in that chair! I'd never recognize it! Sometimes it seems the older things are the best made, we just have to "spruce them up" once in a while, and they last forever!

  3. That chair looks amazing. I never buy cushions for the outside because they look awful after one season. I may just change my mind now.

  4. WOh! I can't believe you were able to get that seat that clean with oxi-clean I have used it before but not tried on cushions yet. But it's good to know it works good for it. That's why I love seeing reviews on products to see if they are as good as they say and also to learn new ways to use them. Thanks for the info.

  5. Wow--the OxiClean did a great job on your chair!! I just bought a couple of tubs of it so we can use it to scrub our deck, which really needs some attention. I love that it does the job but that I don't have to worry about using toxic chemicals around the dogs and people who'll be out there. I'm really encouraged after seeing your before-and-after pictures! Thanks.

  7. Great tips! Unfortunately we don't have patio furniture that we can clean. We have a metal chair that does need to be painted though.

  8. Oxi Clean is fantastic, I am always so surprised it works when I don't expect anything to work at all. It's amazing what a little cleaning and some colorful flowers can do to really brighten up your backyard.

  10. I , ttoo, love Oxi-clean and I will use it on my patio furniture before I put it out on our patio. I love Oxi-clean and I will use your tips. My frugal tip is to buy a beautiful hanging basket and put the contents in your large flower pot. It saves you the work of doing it yourself(except for soil and fertllizer) and it is much less expensive than buying a pot that goes on the patio-about the same cost of fekling it yourself.
