Dry Skin
One of the most common causes of itchy skin is simply dry skin, otherwise known as xerosis. Dry skin may be caused by any number of factors including low humidity of the air, washing too often (the hands especially), wind, sunburn, etc.
Skin Conditions
Another major cause of itchy skin is a skin condition such as psoriasis, eczema, rosacea, etc. Different treatments are tailored for each of these conditions with even prescription medications available for extreme cases. Some relief is often found by simply taking steps to keep the skin moisturized and to keep the skin away from irritating substances.
Allergies and Contact Dermatitis
An allergic reaction to food, medications, pollen, dust, or any other trigger may cause itchy hives or even a flare-up of eczema. Poison ivy and poison oak both contain urushiol which causes allergic contact dermatitis in most people. Contact dermatitis may also be caused by any other number of triggers. According to WebMD, some common triggers for contact dermatitis that people may not typically suspect include hand sanitizers, antibiotic ointments, bandages, nickel, plant matter (tulip bulbs, mango rind, garlic, etc.), rubber, and personal care products. Common skin irritants include perfumes, dyes, and chemicals found in shampoos and other soaps, wool, cosmetics, etc.
Outdoor Hazards
Spending time outdoors in the summer heat can sometimes increase the risk for itchy skin in a couple of ways. Sweat can sometimes cause itchy skin. There are a number of different insects and arachnids that may bite or sting; leaving irritated and itchy skin in their wake.
Infections and Parasites
Fungus infections such as athlete’s foot, dandruff, etc. can irritate the skin and create an itchy situation. Parasites such as lice, scabies, mites, and others will definitely make their presence known by the frustrating itch that they create. Bacterial infections such as impetigo and folliculitis may also be to blame. Viruses like chickenpox, measles, rubella, among others can also cause their share of problems with the skin.
Liver and Kidney Conditions
Any liver condition that results in higher levels of bile salts can cause the skin to itch. In addition, any kidney malfunction that causes elevated levels of urea in the blood can also be problematic for the skin.
Nutrient Deficiencies
A deficiency in certain vitamins can be the cause behind itchy skin.
Other Conditions
The skin can become itchy when there is any situation that changes the normal levels of hormones in the body including pregnancy, menopause, etc. Some autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Systemic sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis can affect the skin. Celiac disease, some cancers, and conditions that affect the nervous system can also be to blame.
Itchy skin is only rarely caused by a more serious internal condition. Usually, there is dry skin, a skin irritant, allergy, bug bite, or other simple cause behind the irritated skin. More information about pruritus may be found on the website for Mayo Clinic. Determining the cause will help a patient to find the appropriate treatment that will help to relieve the irritation. It is vital to always speak with a medical professional with any health-related concerns and before beginning any treatment.
