Are you and/or your family a gadget and tech loving family like we are in my home? Oh yes we love our toys and we love to have fun so naturally when we were asked if wanted to review the Darkside Ollie we jumped at the chance. Did I mention we’re also big Star Wars fans? Yeah to say it was a no brainer would have been an understatement.
However my hubby and I had to be covert about
testing out having fun with the Darkside Ollie as we didn’t want our daughter to know about it yet. After all fun is not exclusive to kids and we wanted to surprise her at Christmas keep it all to ourselves. Well at least for a week or so but we are going to surprise her on Christmas Eve with the Darkside Ollie.
I OWN YOU – I am the Darkside
I have to admit I even got a kick out of opening the box, pulling out the Darkside Ollie and then seeing this card. Nice touch Sphero, nice touch!
It didn’t take long for the Darkside Ollie to charge and good thing too we were anxious to try it out. I would recommend letting it charge overnight though just to be the safe side. Let me tell you the force is strong with this one, it’s not your childhood remote control toy from the 80s and early 90s. Heck we didn’t even have smartphones then so of course this one is already a step above as you control it with your IOS of Android device. It comes with 2 Turbo Tires, 2 Nubby Tires, 2 Prime Hubs, 2 Flux Hubs, USB charging cable and of course the apps are free.
So what? What can the Darkside Ollie do?
Darkside can roll at speeds of up to 14mph and it’s Bluetooth SMART with a range of up to 100 feet. It can turn like nobody’s business and zoom off with the best NASCAR has to offer, well if they were the Darkside Ollie’s size. We love how it can turn on a dime, heck I can’t turn that well in my minivan, don’t I wish! Don’t take my word for it, here’s a quick video of the Darkside Ollie in action. Keep in mind this was literally our first try with the Darkside. We hadn’t gone completely over to the darkside yet, we’re just testing the waters and yet we still had fun. No wonder the darkside is so appealing!
Now that is just a teaser, as I said it was our first foray to the darkside but I have to say I couldn’t keep up with the camera it took off so quickly! If you take the nubby tires off you can have them drift like a street racer, Fast & Furious Tokyo Drift anyone? The Darkside app teaches you how to use this fun gadget, how to do the tricks and basically just guides you as you go. It’s quite user friendly.
We named our Darkside Ollie the Darkside Sutter (our last name). Here’s a glimpse of what the app will walk you through.
The Darkside Ollie glows all sorts of colors and you can even customize the colors if you want. There are some presets but I’m always all about the color so I had fun checking out all the colors. This super quick video is just us playing with the colors and showing you the rainbow you have to select from.
oops did that make you dizzy? Maybe the force is not strong with you. 😉 Told you I was having fun with this toy. The driving apps for the Darkside are Ollie, Draw N’ Drive and there are programming apps too for those geeks at heart like us: MacroLab, OrbBasic and wait for it it’s a hackable and programmable internal robot. Yeah I’m not at that level but a geek girl can dream right?
Now as I mentioned the first video was our first go at giving the Darkside Ollie a try so we took it outside to test it in the great Pacific Northwest terrain, the streets of suburbia! Well we do have a forest across from our house and the ground was wet and full of pine needles. You can see in the pictures that the Darkside Ollie has water on it, but that did not stop the Ollie, it did carry on at full speed, love it!
Our goal is of course to master all the tricks but we’ve decided that we should probably wait for our daughter so she can
catch up teach us how to do them all.
Here are just some of the colors you can customize on the Darkside Ollie app. I told you I’m all about the tech and colors! 🙂
Right now the Darkside Ollie is available for $99 and for all that it can do we think this makes for a fabulous high end gift that will be sure to please any tech/gadget/Star Wars lover and anyone who loves toys, wants thinks to go at high speed an not worry about breaking it. Did we mention the Darkside Ollie is one tough roller. We already said he’s water resistant (tested that), shock proof and is one tough Ollie as it’s shell is a tough polycarbonate (think Han Solo as Jabba’s wall decoration – it’s that tough) so don’t worry you can just have fun, Ollie is darkside tough!
Overall we’re very happy with the Darkside Ollie and we know our tech girl aka our daughter is going to love it too, the only problem is we may have to get a second one so we can all play nicely together.
