How to Be a Doggy Dentist During National Pet Dental Health Month

As pet parents, we do whatever we can to keep our pets happy and healthy, but is their dental health as good as it could be? Dental health is crucial to the overall well-being of your pet and can have serious consequences if left unchecked.

Similar to humans, poor dental hygiene causes bad breath, plaque, tartar, gingivitis, periodontitis, and tooth root abscesses in dogs. At its worst, bad dental health can contribute to more serious health issues. Inflamed gums, for example, can cause bacterial infections that can affect organs such as the heart and kidneys with extreme cases resulting in death. That's just some of the reasons why dog teeth cleaning is so important.

Good dental health is paramount for your pet. Healthy teeth aid in chewing which leads to proper digestion by allowing enzymes to break down their food. Some preventative measures you can take is teaching your pup at a young age to open their mouths and allowing you to look inside. This training will prepare them for getting their teeth brushed, which should start as early as possible. Be sure to use a toothbrush and toothpaste specifically designed for pets.

Did you know small dogs are more prone to dental issues? With their small mouths and even smaller teeth, keeping an eye on their dental health can be especially challenging. While manually brushing their teeth is the best option, you can also look for pet food that supports dental health such as the NOW FRESH Small Breed recipes from GO HERE. Our dog Little Zeus LOVES the NOW FRESH Small Breed recipes.

Here's Little Zeus licking his lips after eating some NOW FRESH small breed food. He sure does love it!

The NOW FRESH Small Breed recipes are formulated with ingredients that help support oral health and fresh breath, including sodium tripolyphosphate, which binds calcium to protect teeth from tartar formation. Peppermint and parsley are also included as natural ingredients to promote fresh breath. In addition, the small clover-shaped kibble is one of the smallest in the market, contributing to high palatability, easy chewing, and effective digestion.

If your dog is exhibiting a preference for soft food, is eating on one side, or yelps when chewing bones or toys, take them to a vet to identify the problem. There’s no way better way to celebrate National Pet Dental Health Month than making sure Fido’s bite is healthy and strong!

Do you arrange dog teething cleaning whether it's you doing it yourself or the vet? what else do you do so that your dog has great dental care?

  1. I had no idea my poor pupper needed his teeth cleaned quite often! Greenies just won't cut it, we'll just clean his teeth the old fashioned way!

  2. So important since we can't know if they are hurting to get their yearly dental cleanings done, my dog has had 7 teeth removed, 2 of them were broken and I had no idea. It's part of being a responsible owner of your fur baby, yes it's spendy but worth your dogs health!

  3. Just like with humans, dog's teeth need to be cleaned for their good health since bad teeth can lead to other health problems. The point was well made in the article.

  4. (Why Dog Teeth Cleaning Matters) I was just talking about this with my third oldest son and his wife about how important it is keeping their border collie Mia's teeth cleaned and brushed at home. I told them what a vet would charge to do it and they both almost fell over when I mentioned the cost of a cleaning.

    • Hey Beverly as our article says it's important for ALL dogs to have their teeth cleaned, we don't say that's just for small breeds. Research has just shown that small breeds can be more prone to it.

  7. Sharing this with my niece who has a little fellow that looks just like your Zeus. HIs name is Prince and he used to be king of the house till the baby arrived. Prince decided that he would let Zadaya be princess and he would be her guard. Zayda is almost 2 and is in charge of giving him his treats and putting dry dog food in his bowl. They need to check this dog food out because they want him around for a long time.

I agree, teeth cleaning is crucial for your dog's overall health.. even if you don't want to do it yourself, take your animal in to Petco or Petsmart and have them do it.

  18. We rescued a little doxie that hadn't had much done to his teeth. They had to put him to sleep just to clean his teeth. He lost quite a few the first time. We had to do it a second time because some that they tried to save were already too far gone. I don't want to ever have to put him through that again. He gets his teeth brushed once a day and he loves the flavor so he doesn't resist at all and he never has bad breath. He's a family member and we will do anything we need to to take care of him. It's not an inexpensive procedure either, but it was worth it for him not to be hurting.

  20. We have a chihuahua too and I brush over her teeth with a fingertip baby toothbrush. She hasn't had any big issues yet but I know that dental problems are a problem for chis. I think I am going to give this food a try, there is a place semi local to me and a five dollar coupon too. Our Zoe is so picky, it drives me crazy.
