Family Foodie Fun in Sorrento, Italy
So you've finally got your vacation planned and you're taking the kids over to Italy. The trip promises to be a fantastic way to broaden your family's cultural awareness and interest in the country’s culture, but will this interest reach right through to testing the local cuisine? If your kids are known to be fussy eaters, you're bound to be a little nervous yourself. So here are a few ideas for keeping your kids nourished when away.
The great thing about a trip to Italy is that everyone is familiar with some of the staple menus. If all else fails, you can treat the kids to authentic Italian pizza and pasta, but with a twist. The added benefit is that pizza is made differently in Italy to the standard Italian chain restaurants back home, but it's familiar enough for your kids to want to test it!
If you are looking for the perfect place for your family to try out some new flavours without getting too much of unfamiliar items, you cannot do better than spending some time in Sorrento. This jewel of town on the Bay of Naples has foodie culture down pat. There are a myriad of bistros and trattorias that serve pizza, pasta and other well known dishes. For those that want a truly memorable experience, when booking Sorrento holidays it is possible to find a place that will teach you to cook local dishes.
Some may think that cooking classes are for adults and even more specifically for foodies, but kids actually love to be involved in cooking. Letting them experience a new food culture from the perspective of a trained chef is a great way to get them over the hump of unfamiliarity that many face when looking at things like clam pasta or gnocchi (potato pasta), both of which are very popular in Sorrento. The Old Taverna Sorrentina Cooking School is a popular option, however there is no shortage of places with quality teachers.
Pizza is always a popular food item and Sorrento has some amazing restaurants. Try Pizzeria da Franco, their arugula, tomato and cheese pizza is outstanding. Another excellent option is Ristorante il Buco, which serves modern takes on classic Italian including some excellent local seafood options, the kids will also get a chance to dress up, which makes the experience that much more engaging.
No matter how you spend your time in Sorrento, food will not only be a primary focus of each day, but also be one of the strongest memories of the trip. While spending a day at Pompeii is a powerful image, the flavours and texture of a proper Caprese salad will stay with you and your family long after the memories of walking around ruins will.
This place sounds wonderful! I love tasting new foods, I really like that they have a place here for the children to not only try the foods but also help in the making of that dish.

With their own name of cheese, Sorrento has got to have great cheese. And, who doesn't love cheese? No one I know.
