Tips for decorating and making fondant

Add some flavor

Don't like the taste of fondant? Me either it's just well really no taste so add some if you like. If you make your own fondant you can utilize a number of either artificial or natural flavors. You just have to knead it into the homemade fondant. Do one drop at a time because once you have too much it's hard to go back.

A few flavors for fondant are: vanilla extract, almond extract, peppermint extract and well you get the idea.

Rolling Fondant

It's best to roll fondant in a cooler and dry room. You don't want it to be too hot, otherwise, the fondant will be too soft work with. Make sure the surface you're rolling it on is a clean, dry surface. If you have one a silicone pastry mat is the perfect surface. Whatever surface you use make sure it's clean and dry and you dust it with powdered sugar so it doesn't stick.  Roll the fondant to about ⅛” thick, if it's too thick it can crack more easily.

If the fondant does crack, you can fix it. It dries very quickly and this is when it can get cracks. Just knead it with your fingers to warm it up a bit and smooth it over. Don't use water or any liquid!alien cupcakes frostingTo get the fondant to stick on the cupcakes the frosting will help you attach it so you're good to go with the cupcakes. However, if you're going to attach fondant to say cookies you could brush a teeny amount of corn syrup on the fondant then place it on the cookies.

Now let's get to the full recipe and instructions that you can also print off if you like (or not).

  • Cake box mix + all ingredients to make 12 cupcakes (note: most cake box mixes yield 24 cupcakes, so we recommend dividing the mix and ingredients by half to make one dozen)
  • 2 drops green gel food coloring, divided
  • 3-4 oz. green rolling fondant
  • 2-3 oz. white rolling fondant
  • 1-2 oz. black rolling fondant
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups confectioners’ sugar

  1. Prepare cupcake batter according to the package’s directions. Once the batter forms, add one small drop of green gel food coloring and mix until completely tinted.
  2. Bake cupcakes in a muffin tin lined with paper muffin cups.
  3. Allow the cupcakes to cool completely before decorating.
  4. As the cupcakes cool, roll out 12-36 logs out of green fondant - they should each be 1 ½ inches long and about ¼ of an inch thick. Set aside.
  5. Use a rolling pin to roll out both white fondant and black fondant (separately), until they’re each about ¼ of an inch thick.
  6. Use the back of a Wilton tip #12 to cut out 36 circles from the white fondant.
  7. Using the smaller end of the Wilton tip, cut out 36 black circles from the black fondant.
  8. Press one black circle on one white fondant circle - repeat for each. Set aside.
  9. In a large bowl, beat together butter, sugar and milk using an electric mixer. Start speed on low and gradually increase to high.
  10. Once the ingredients are well-combined, add a drop of green gel food coloring. Continue mixing until buttercream is completely tinted.
  11. Scoop green buttercream into a piping bag with Wilton tip #12 attached.
  12. Generously frost the center of each cupcake.
  13. Place 3 fondant eyes on each frosted cupcake. At the top of each icing mound, insert green fondant logs - 1-3 log per alien.

Alien CupcakesThese Alien Cupcakes are a hit with kids and adults and hey who doesn't love a tasty cupcake, aliens or not. You can also add flavoring to the buttercream if you like. I'm always a fan of vanilla but the other flavorings that go with the cupcakes like peppermint are also fun for the buttercream. I didn't mention this one but I also like lemon extract in the buttercream.Who is going to make these fun Alien Cupcakes? Make sure to PIN this recipe for later.
