Getting help for schizophrenia, addiction treatment & more

I find it disheartening that there is such a stigma attached to those with mental illness issues. Sometimes these people are marginalized and can't get the treatment or help they need. While I have not personally dealt with any mental health issues with family my brother did have a terrible motorcycle accident several years ago that caused some brain damaged and afterwards he also was addicted to drugs.

It was absolutely shocking how difficult it was to get help for my brother and his addiction. If he didn't check himself into a facility (if there was even room) we were told we couldn't do anything. However as it was complicated by the fact that he had some brain damage his thought processes were not always clear and our argument was how could he decide for himself when 1) he was overtaken by this addiction and 2) had brain damage that further inhibited his thinking to get himself help?

When I read about Morningside Recovery I thought to myself I wish there had been such a facility where we lived and were trying to get my brother the help for his addiction. They have programs for depression, anxiety, bipolar, schizoprehnia treatment and yes an addiction recover program. They also have intervention services, long term care and so much more to offer that it's too much to include it all here but it's worth taking a look at their website.

When browsing through the website I was impressed with the various services and treatments they have available and in particular I like their mission statement and values where they state: "Every client at Morningside Recovery is treated individually, but equally, and receives the same respect through their most difficult times as we would each expect for ourselves". Exactly people need to be treated with respect and still be seen as human beings and not be stigmatized by  their mental health disorder which happens all too often! Thank you Morningside Recovery for helping people who need it and getting them to learn how to help themselves again!

  2. I hate how much depression is stigmatized. People think you can just get over it, but it's a real disease just like diabetes or asthma!

  3. That was very interesting to me. I used to teach Special Ed. I'm glad to see that some of these "labels" are now diagnosed as an illness.

  6. Great Article. My brother also has schizophrenia and you are correct, there is so much judgement associated with the diagnosis. He is caught up in an endless loop of not being able to work because of his illness, but denied on Social Security so he has no insurance. Life is such a stuggle for him!

  7. i work with people who have physical and mental disabilities. I think if people would get to know them before they judge them they would get to meet some really wonderful people.
