We were lucky enough to receive both the Food Adventures and Nature Discovery Boxes pictured below. The Discovery Boxes are geared for children 3-8 years of age but you can get children of all ages involved if you’re creative. So we got a bit creative and had lots of fun in the process!
As my daughter is 11 years old she is a bit older than the age group these boxes are geared towards but we not only involved her we let her lead. It’s a great opportunity to give older children the experience to lead the younger ones. So my daughter started with the Nature Discovery Box which is perfect for our neighborhood and she led two younger children who are friends of our family. They were five and seven years of age a boy and a girl and they were so excited as we were exploring the forest which just happens to be right in front of where we live. Yes we live right across from a forest and in fact we’re only about 400 feet from a watershed park so we had lots of area to explore from. Not to worry though if you don’t live near a forest like we do it doesn’t matter they can just do some urban exploring as there are plants, bugs and more no matter where you live!
My daughter led the way (I of course went along since for safety reasons) and off to the forest we went. The five year old was given the magnifying glass to begin and the 7 year old the journal. They looked at bugs, leaves, pine cones, flowers and more. The 7 year old wrote some wonderful descriptions of the bugs and drew a few of them time. He was not into drawing flowers he said. My daughter would say let’s see if we can find our different leafs or 3 bugs that kind of thing to get them off and interested.
It was so fun to watch my daughter lead and be “the supervisor” as she warned them about being careful where they stepped and to stay together etc.. and to get exploring in the forest. It’s a great way to get kids engaged, having fun and getting them thinking about the environment and being more green themselves. They’re having so much fun they don’t even realize how much they’re learning but they are learning!
The Food Adventures Discovery Box is just as much fun and we’ve already started to do some of those activities. We just planted the seeds for our own basil plant and my daughter even though it’s only been a few days keeps checking it to see if it has sprouts yet. There are still three more activities for the Food Discovery Box for us to try so we know what we’re doing on the next rainy day here which is bound to be soon.
Overall the Green Kids Crafts gets 5 out of 5 stars for creativity, engaging children with fun activities that are also educational and for be Green – love it!
