Powered by Mom Blog believes in the value of higher education, what do you think?
Do you think it’s important to further your education? Have you been thinking about pursuing graduate studies at any time or wondered if it’s worth pursuing?
I will admit I might be a bit biased when it comes to talking about post-secondary education and whether or not you should pursue graduate studies. Why would I be biased you might wonder? Well let me share, up until last year I worked for 15 years in the post secondary sector. I worked at one of the largest universities where I lived and another more unique but well respected university. When I started working in the universities I only had a few university credits under my belt, no university degree. I had started out as a secretary, then went from Administrative Assistant to an Executive Assistant over the years. I did many if not all of the duties of a Manager, however even though I applied for the management positions I was never successful. Do you wonder why? You’ve probably already guessed it’s because not only did I not have a university degree what they really wanted was someone with a Master’s degree. Even though I had the experience not having the degree held me back and I wanted to advance.
I’m not going to go on and on about my struggles, the point I would like to share is that it’s important in today’s world to have an education and for many jobs you need even more than a Bachelor’s degree you need a Master’s degree. I did pursue and finally received my Master’s degree which not only helped me advance at the university where I was working at the time (yes I was successful at obtaining a management position) but it’s helping me even more now. I’m no longer at the university, I’m now a small business owner with an employee of one, me of course but I’m amazed to realize how much of what I learned during my graduate studies I’ve been able to apply as not only a Manager but not as an entrepreneur. It has bee invaluable as I would not have had any experience in building a business plan, I learned more about negotiations, contracts, employee engagement and so much more!
If you’re wondering about pursuing your graduate studies and are not sure where to start think about a few things, what do you hope to gain by it, what are you interested in and what degrees are employers looking for? I can tell you that Masters of Business Administration (MBA) are one of the top sought after degrees employers want to see in applicants, at least from what I’ve seen. An MBA is a high value degree and if you’re interested check out a masters in business administration from the University of Denver as a starting point. I’ve read and have heard good things about it but again I don’t think you can go wrong with having a Master’s degree especially an MBA. Feel free to share your thoughts as always we love to read your comments!
