Powered by Mom and Bloggity Blog have teamed up to bring you a wonderful Giveaway!
We will be giving away 2 copies of this wonderful book Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns Sportsmanship by Howard Binkow
Powered by Mom’s Review
This book is a must have for teachers, parents and well any adult whose involved with children and wants to help them learn about sportsmanship. The book is beautifully illustrated so that the colors and pictures themselves alone would catch the attention of any child. It’s perfect children in the 4-8 year old range to be read to or to learn to read themselves as the writing is direct, clear and suited for that age range.
I had my 10 year old daughter Sian read it to a friend’s daughter Dakota who is 6 years old. Having her do this worked out beautifully she had the 6 year old’s attention and I could tell by watching them that Dakota was interested in looking at the pictures too. There were a few giggles here and there and a comment about Harold being a bad sport (at the beginning of the story) which was wonderful because that meant that the message of the story was getting through.
I think it’s a very well written book that teaches children the lesson about being a good sport in a fun way and captures their attention through the wonderful illustrations.
I’m not the only one who thinks it’s a wonderful book. Here are but a few quotes from people who have sent in their reviews about this book. I love the one from the first grader. You can see more reviews HERE

My students didn’t have a grasp of the word “sportsmanship” before we started reading the book. They thought it was just “play nice”, “do your best,” and even “try hard to always win.” After reading the book, we had great conversation and they did a drawing/write about how they could be a good sport and use sportsmanship. They did some great work; we made a class book which they love to read. It’s very important to teach them the correct vocabulary, like “sportsmanship”
The website where you can find out more about the series of the Harold B. Wigglebottom book is wonderful to visit. They have animated books posted online in addition to songs, games, and you can print your own coloring book too!

I would love the sportsmanship book. I am a school counselor and often use the howard books.
They are great and the kids love the lessons.
I often thinking he emphasis has shifted to just winning instead of good sportsmanship.
My dad taught us to be good sports no matter win or lose. That lesson has stuck with me throughout my life

I have 2 books that I think my kids would like. The first is the book about sportmanship. All of my kids are in sports, and I would want them to know about being able to lose like a winner. The second is the book about the monkey on his back-telling the truth. I know having you kids, too often they do not tell the truth.

Hm….I actually have always been a strong advocate for GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP! I would shake the hands of all my competitors and when I was a track official I would disqualify athletes who were unsportsmanlike!

I would LOVE all 10 books but I really like Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns Sportsmanship (winning isn’t everything) by Howard Binkow and feel my son could benefit from it!

I dont know that sportmanship was such a problem when I was a child, but now I see parents with poor sportsmanship which trickles down to children. There is too much emphasis on winning
Aimee Dietrich says
As a teacher, they all look awesome. Bullying is an issue dear to my heart
Angela Hartness says
If I was ever a bad sport to anyone it was my 2 younger brothers. I would get upset when I would lose a game to one of them.

Learns to Listen is my favorite of the Howard books. I’m an elementary school counselor always on the lookout for good quality books to teach sportsmanship skills & concepts. I use Howard several times during the year to teach social skills.

Oh,yes! I was a terrible bad sport when I was a kid! I would cry if I lost at any game, especially Monopoly. Maybe that’s why I don’t like to play it now. I didn’t cheat, though. I just played “drama queen” when I lost.
