IAMS HOME 4 THE HOLIDAYS, IN ITS 14th YEAR, SETS OUT TO FIND FOREVER HOMES FOR ORPHANED ANIMALS

The annual pet adoption drive boasts 7 million pets adopted over the past 13 years

For more information about the campaign or to find out how to get involved, become a fan of the Iams Facebook page (for the United States & Canada) at www.facebook.com/Iams or visit www.iams.ca.

Quick note the picture above is our daughter and three of our dogs (from L to R) Juno, Little Zeus and Luna. Juno my beloved dog is no longer with us but she and her sister Jewel whom belonged to a family of our very good friends both brought us many years of joy. All our dogs and our current feline Oliver the cat are adopted animals from various shelters in our area. The joy that your furry companions can bring to you is priceless.

I simply had to share about Iams Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption drive when I recently learned about it. It's entering its 14th year and as always they help to  raise awareness of pet adoption while also ensuring proper nutrition for more homeless pets. The program which runs Oct. 1, 2012 through Jan. 2, 2013  celebrates over 7 million pets adopted out since it first started.  This year, Iams is working with founding partner Helen Woodward Animal Center, the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies and more than 4,000 animal organizations worldwide to encourage pet adoption.

Wow this is simply amazing, I'm touched by all the hard work and dedication that all of these people do and encourage everyone in Canada, the United States and everywhere to help wherever they can. We can all contribute as not contribution is too small and it doesn't always have to be a monetary contribution. I personally try to bring food to at least on of our local shelters/societies when I can or volunteer my time as our time and and how we can help is also invaluable. For example you could volunteer whenever you had time to help out your local shelter whether it be any of the following they always need help.

  • Volunteer to walk the dogs at the shelter
  • Fundraise
  • Groom pets
  • Train pets on basic tasks
  • Help with newsletters & website
  • Provide event support & so much more
  • Spread the word! Simply telling other animal lovers about adopting can lead to a pet moving into a loving home Many people are unaware that there are healthy pets available too. Shelters have pure breed rescue programs for those interested in a specific breed

If you're looking for a pet to adopt then adopt from your local shelter and consider an animal that's not a puppy or kitten as puppies and kittens tend to get adopted first. Remember though if you're considering adding a furry member to your family it should be thought of as a forever home, they're family too.  Here's a well thought out list from Iams to consider before you adopt a pet:

Things to Consider Before Adopting

  • TIME: be available to train, play and interact with your pet
  • HOME: a pet-friendly home with lots of room
  • FINANCES: able to cover food, medical, entertainment and insurance costs (many people don't think about this one)
  • FAMILY: depending on age of children in your household, certain pets are more suitable
  • VET: find a local vet you feel comfortable with
  • SUPPLIES: get collars, food & litter boxes before to avoid stress
It's sad to realize some of these statistics:
  • Only 45% of companion pets admitted into shelters are adopted
  • Approximately 36% of shelter pets are euthanized
  • Every day more and more animals end up in shelters or in rescue care, and more than 25 per cent are pure breeds.

Hooray for all the wonderful work Iams is doing below is just one of many things they are doing.

  • Donating through Bags 4 Bowls – For those who are already pet parents, Iams will donate one bowl of food to a participating Iams Home 4 the Holidays animal organization for every specially marked package of Iams pet food purchased during the campaign
I could go on and on but I won't :). If you can help please do so in any way that you can even if it's just spreading the word about pet adoptions. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we didn't need pet shelters one day because all animals had forever homes and were properly taken care of, spayed and neutered, maybe one day but for now let's do what we can.

Again to find out more you can visit Facebook.com/iams – Visit the Iams Facebook page and click to “Like” the page or various messages, photos, videos, etc. For each “Like” comment Iams will donate meals to participating animal shelters

Let's all do what we can and help these wonderful creatures who've done nothing but want to be our friends and family members.

  1. I am a big proponent of animal adoption and love to hear about the people who also support this cause. All of my babies have been rescued. I only wish I could save more of them.

  2. Thank you so much for sharing this information about the Iams Home 4 The Holidays campaign! Thank you also for letting everyone know that rescue pets are every bit as wonderful, smart, loving and trainable as pets purchased from breeders and pet stores. There are SO many incredible animals who lose their lives in shelters because of misinformation about these animals being somehow "less than." My rescue dog, Wilson, is like a dream come true. Potty trained, doesn't beg, good on walks, knows how to sit and loves to cuddle! I can't imagine why someone gave him up but I am glad they did because he has made my life the most amazing adventure and I am never letting him go!

  3. I have a sweetheart named Lola that I rescued 2 1/2 years ago. She's my protector and keeps my feet warm! Keep up the good work. Animals know love.

  4. I always try to donate money or my time to our local no-kill shelter. I can't believe they're in their 14th year- they have found millions of forever homes for adorable animals!

  5. What a great cause. Those statistics are so sad. I can't believe that 36% are euthanized - that is terrible. I miss my dog so much (hit by a car while chasing a bunny) and am really looking forward to adopting another.

  6. At the time, I'm living in an apartment situation and can't keep one. I love animals, especially little kittens. I donate a small amount each month to the North Shore Animal League America. I love watching the videos people post online of their pets.

  7. I had two orphaned animals, but one died recently. I can not get anymore dogs at this time because I am not able to afford it. I would love to get another dog that is orphaned! I love dogs, and if I had the money I would make a home for an orphaned dog!

  8. I believe animal rescue is so important. My kids and I have rescue dogs. They are so full of life and love. They just want someone to take care of them and love them. Thank your for your article. It is something that requires people to step up and take responsibility and take care of the animals that they bring home. It's a shame for these innocent animals to be put down or mistreated because they are disposable. Your blog will hopefully open some eyes and hearts. Merry Christmas and God bless.

  9. My family is big on animals we have a small shelter for cats and we take them in treat them like family and find homes for them. We have a dog that we got from the shelter and she is so loving she is an older dog but we think others should look at older dogs and cats as well they are just as good and love you just as much

  10. We have three dogs and 2 cats...all are rescues, either from shelters, or showing up on the doorstep half-dead... or on the verge of being sent to a shelter and we intercepted them... all of our pets over the years, including birds, etc have been rescued, and honestly...I think rescue animals are sweeter...they know they are loved 🙂
