7 Ideas to Celebrate Halloween at Home
Holidays are approaching which means that you need to find a way to celebrate them without disrupting social distancing measures. Of course, you will still miss the atmosphere of togetherness, however, with a little bit of imagination and the wonders of modern technology, you can celebrate Halloween at home. There are some ways to create a spooky atmosphere for your kids and enjoy a couple of cocktails with your friends.

1) Organize a Zoom Party
If you have an awesome Halloween costume but nowhere to wear it, don’t worry, host a party online. Put on your creepiest outfit, place your spooky decorations next to the camera, turn on Halloween music, and invite your friends to celebrate Halloween over Zoom or Skype. And don’t forget about cocktails! Decorate straws with bats and spiders, make a reddish cocktail, like strawberry Margarita or Zombie, add a bunch of small plastic spiders to the glass, and your creepy Halloween beverage is ready.
2) Play a Halloween Game
You can celebrate Halloween at home by playing games with your family:
- Halloween Grab Bag is a game where you put gross stuff like cold spaghetti or gelatin into a box and members of your family have to stick their hand into the box and guess what’s inside.
Some games can be played during a Halloween party over Zoom, for example:
- Halloween Movie Trivia is a quiz about famous Halloween films. Prepare a set of questions about Friday the 13th, Hocus Pocus, Saw, etc., and host an online quiz night.
3) Make a Halloween Slideshow
To build anticipation for your friends before the party and give them a slight hint of what it is going to be, create a Halloween slideshow. Select roughly 40 scary pictures from various movies and mix them together with some photos from your previous Halloween parties. Add a creepy Halloween song – the classic “The Phantom of the Opera” always works or go for something more up-to-date like the theme from “Stranger Things”. Finally, share your little movie with your friends via social media or email and make them look forward to the party.
4) Host a Zoom Movie Night
Watching a scary movie to celebrate Halloween at home is an old tradition that should not be stopped because of social distancing. Talk to your friends and decide which film you would like to watch together. If you cannot make a decision, pick two or three! This scary movie list will help you find the best-rated films, from old-time classics to modern horror masterpieces.
5) Prepare Spooky Snacks & Sweets
If you enjoy cooking, maybe you should consider making creepy snacks. Involve your kids in the process by letting them assist you. Use your creativity and create a face in a wheel of brie, add two pieces of olives to make eyes, and use ketchup to make the bloody face.
If you are a talented baker, prepare a spooky pastry. Make a batch of delicious colorful cupcakes and turn cupcake liners into witch hats.
6) Decorate Your House
Kids love Halloween decorations, so let’s give them an opportunity to express their ideas. Decorating your house on Halloween is a chance for them to practice their creativity before the next big holiday comes. Create spooky webs with scary spiders, paint glasses and plates with scary faces and bloodstains, draw a skull on a lantern and hang it up at the front door.
7) Read Halloween Books
For small kids, some Halloween stories and movies might be too scary or graphic. However, reading mysterious books about vampires and ghosts is also a great way to celebrate Halloween at home with children. Luckily, there are Halloween age-appropriate books that will help to boost your kids’ imagination without destroying their mental health. Look for bestsellers on Amazon: “Room on the Broom” by Julia Donaldson or “Spooky Pookie” by Sandra Boynton, and make your choice together with your little ones.

These are great ideas. I would add create a scavenger hunt to it. Since we didn’t trick or treat this year I bought little treat bags from dollar tree and filled them with candy, pencils, mini slime bottles, etc. Then I created clues and had the kids go with their trick or treat bags on this scavenger hunt throughout the house. Every new place had a treat bag for each and a new clue. It was a lot of fun.
