My Mom Cave

Every mom deserves her own personal oasis - a mom cave so to speak

That space where she can relax, enjoy a glass of wine, read a book and have some of her favourite snacks.

Being a Mom and wife is no easy feat. In fact, the two jobs combined have been my toughest ones yet and I've had my fair share of hard jobs in the past. I knew before I got married that married life wasn't always going to be adorable and fun and over the years we've had our fair share of ups and downs but it wasn't until we had our daughter that things really started to get interesting. Seemingly overnight my life became less about me and more about juggling the needs of my husband and little one. So many things changed in my life over the course of a few years, it seemed so hard to believe that I was the same person as when I started on my journey as a wife.

Here's my favourite spot to relax. It's my favourite couch and soft blanket where I go to read a book or watch a movie, or have a glass of wine.

My Mom Cave

Of course, the biggest change for me was going from having an abundance of freedom and free time to having hardly at all. Between family which includes our two dogs and one cat and work I'm often stretched pretty thin. There were days when I would have given just about anything to have a few precious minutes to myself without having to play referee to the kids or meet the ever changing needs of my husband. It’s not that I've never regretted my decision to become a wife to my wonderful husband nor do I regret becoming a mother but I know my fellow parents out there know what it's like to not even be able to go to the bathroom without an entourage. Over the years I've learned to take that sort of thing with a bit of humour and it doesn't drive me out of my mind like it used to in the early days when I used to be driven crazy by the sheer changes my life underwent.

This past year I came across an idea that I've been in love with and can't believe that I never thought of it before seeing the idea. We've all heard of the classic "man cave" and I'm sure my readers have seen one or two in their time whether it be because of a husband or boyfriend. A man cave is a special space within your home or outside that is specifically designed to fit the needs and reflect the tastes of your spouse. They can house anything from pool tables to huge HDTV's and your spouse can most often be found within when the pressures of life start closing in and he just needs a breather. When I came across the idea of a "Mom Cave" it was the most brilliant idea EVER. I mean, if men can have a space to call their very own then why shouldn't we women be entitled to the same thing?

The best part of my research was that I knew we had just such a space in our home that I could use for my own "Mom cave." As of yet I haven't been able to decorate or furnish it the way I want but I have started using it for a sort of time out spot in the meantime until I can do what I have planned. In the meantime, until I get my motivation to transform the space, I've been dreaming up the ideal "she cave" and have some great ideas on what to include once I start the transformation.

My ideal "Mom cave" isn't fancy by any means but it would be the ideal retreat when life gets me stressed. For starters, I would make sure my family knew that it was a space designed especially for me and that should they find me hiding within, I'm enjoying time to myself without any interruptions. For a Mom cave this is key. Then I would make sure I installed a bookshelf or two so I could pick out one of my favorite books at any time and read while enjoying the peace and quiet of my "Mom cave." There are so many things that I'd want my "Mom cave" to have but one of my biggest wants would be a great view of the outdoors. There is nothing that relaxes me more than to gaze out on nature while enjoying the peace and quiet. Add some scented candles or an essential oil diffuser to the mix and my "Mom cave" would be the most ideal spot on earth.

Well, almost anyways. Everyone knows that no "Mom cave" is complete without a brewing system or a glass of wine and snacks. Ever since having kids it's been the bane of my existence that I've never been able to take a single bite without my kids or husband clamoring for a bit of it too. In the seclusion of my "Mom cave" I'd have snacks galore that were meant for me and only me. On the list of snacks would be Twistos.

Twistos are baked snack crackers that are available in a variety of different flavors. Designed to suit the taste of adults, especially Moms who are looking to unwind after a long day, Twistos is the perfect snack to indulge in. Unlike other greasy versions of chips that we all indulge in, Twistos are baked and there's no need to feel unnecessary guilt when you decide to sneak them into the "Mom cave" and indulge. Recently introducing two new flavors to their line of baked snacks, Twistos has a host of delicious flavors to choose from and are sold wherever Twistos Baked Snacks are sold; they can be found in the cracker aisle of mass retailers. Their yummy flavors include:

  • Toasted Garlic and Rosemary
  • Garden Dill & Cream Cheese
  • Bruschetta
  • Asiago
  • Smoked Gouda
  • Parmesan & Garlic

The Twistos brand believes that every mom should have time at the end of the day to unwind, because if anyone deserves to escape to an oasis of calm and tranquility, it’s moms. They did that for one mom, Monique who was nominated by her husband three children. Monique works full times, manages to bring her three children to 15 classes and extracurricular activities through the week and of course there’s managing the house. Yep sounds like a busy mom to me.

  1. I absolutely LOVE the idea of the Mom Cave! While my husband is an awesome partner and dad to our three daughters, I can honestly say that me time is so important for moms- especially myself!- and necessary for recharging. The video is inspiring- the love they have for their mom is awesome and really comes through. I love the whole idea of the mom cave and plan to share this awesome idea with all the moms in my life!

  2. No Mom cave for me. I spend most of my time away from the kids in the Den (where my computer is). Its a really small room, and other than my computer its full of the kid's stuff. I'd love to have a place in the house just for me, but the house isn't big enough for that. Maybe one day 🙂

  6. I love the idea of a Mom cave! It is so important to have a little haven to escape to and relax and take comfort. I am visualizing what I want my space to include to make it a little oasis. Comfort, warmth, access to natural light are key and a few little luxurious touches are enough.

  8. I didn't get my mom cave until my daughter left home but it's great! I turned her room into my oasis and now even the grandkids know to knock before they come in and to leave when I tell them too. LOL! Have my books, crafts and snacks all right there. It's heaven!

  16. How fun! I'm glad that you found a space in your home to be your mom cave. Our place however, is not big enough for either a man cave or a mom cave unfortunately, but I love the idea! I will keep this in mind when we buy a bigger house.

  19. Every mom should have a mom cave. If the guys have their own, why shouldn't moms have a space to call their own? It doesn't have to be a room, it can be a space for moms to relax and enjoy themselves

  23. I think moms deserve a space that is all their own. Moms are always sharing with the family and when mom needs an escape to clear her mind or to just relax, she should be able to get it away from it all.

  24. I had kind of a mom cave for years, but never really got to enjoy the full potential of it until my children moved out. It's my computer room and it is in the laundry room in the basement, but my children TV and computer room was on the other side. Now that I can truly enjoy it, It would be nice to decorate it with the help of Urban barn, and I could enjoy snack from twisto while watching my favourite TV show!

  28. I agree that the hardest part of transitioning into motherhood was going from having free time to barely any at all. Before I had kids, I used to think that with a full time job and house to maintain I had no spare time lol... Boy did I learn a thing or two.

  48. A mom cave would be difficult to come by for me. Mine would need to be sound proof so I don't hear the kids screaming and fighting or the dog barking when friends come over. When all of my kids are older I do plan on using our 3rd car garage spot as a flower space even with a flower walk-in cooler. However that will be some time from now.

  55. Now that my three daughters are grown, I've taken over their old play room and it's become mostly my space. The one daughter who still lives at home spends much of her time when not at work in it with me. We have a TV, a couch, a dining table and chair (I brought the set home from my mom's when she passed - the rest of the chairs are in the basement) that my daughter uses for her laptop and drawing. I also have my dogs' crates in the room, and while I don't really put the dogs in them any more, a couple of them like to just lay in their open crates when I'm watching TV. I do need to get rid of some clutter in the room (some of my daughters' things are still in here and mostly just piled up), and I've started stripping the wallpaper off the walls and am going to paint the walls when I'm done.
