Powered by Mom LOVES her yummy and healthy smoothies but it's time to shake it up a bit (pun intended :))

BananaMangoShake

As many of you may already know I drink a protein fruit smoothie almost every day. In fact my smoothies don't just have fruit in them I sneak spinach or kale in there too and cover up the green color with blueberries, raspberries and blackberries and sweeten it with bananas. I don't have to hide the fact that there's spinach or kale in there any more since my hubby and daughter now know that. I hid it the first time I gave it to them so they wouldn't know there was spinach in it and they couldn't tell when they tasted it! Yes I was sneaky but now that I have my family on a routine to drink our nutritionally power packed smoothies I don't have to hide anything.

It is time however to shake it up a bit as I think we all need a change and trying out some different yummy flavors is always fun. The latest, delicious concoction is a mango, banana smoothie with mango coconut water oh yum yum! Coconut water hydrates, tastes good (especially the mango coconut water) is high in potassium and has many, many more benefits. Like my regular smoothies I still put in flax seed or flax seed oil, vanilla protein powder and a prebiotic powder to help out the digestion. It's still full of some great antioxidants, vitamins and more easily and quickly made like all smoothies.

I think I may mix it up even more and make it more like the one in the picture above that has orange juice in it (you can see that recipe HERE) or I may throw in a whole orange as I like pulp 🙂 I also want to have some fresh mint with it now that would be refreshing indeed! You can mix up the smoothies any way you like with whatever fruits (or sneak in some veggies) that you want , change it up and make it interesting but trying to throw in some extra nutrition like some antioxidants (blueberries are good), flax seed/oil, chia seeds and use a good quality protein powder. You will have one tasty smoothie that packs a nutritious punch and that's my kind of drink.

If you haven't seen it yet you can find out what I put into my super smoothies you can check it out HERE

What kind of smoothie would you like have? Feel free to comment we always love to hear from you!

  1. This sounds so delicious! I've used hemp seed oil and flax seed oil, almond extract (it tastes really sweet like a cherry flavor), etc. in my smoothies. What a great idea to hide your kale in spinache with blueberries! 🙂

  2. Smoothies! It seems I crave them more in the colder months than I do in the summer, for some reason. I like strawberry-banana-kiwi, and then to "healthy it up" a bit, I throw in some Brewer's yeast, and if I'm feeling adventurous, some sort of greens, like kale or spinach. Oh, the possibilities are endless!! I just love them!

  6. Great info! I have been using Kefir lately for my berry/banana smoothies. I have found it is a great source of probiotics and gives the smoothie a nice creamy texture!

  7. I our house we call smoothies "smooshies!" The favorite is to toss a heaping cup of frozen organic berries into the blender with some yoghurt, some hemp protein powder, a dash of stevia, a spoonful of chia and some pure stevia (not the stuff you find in the grocery store). My hubby has t drink it with a straw (!) so he has some reusable glass ones. Next time I'll to sneak in that spinach, though!

    • Stacey it depends on what you want to put into your smoothies and what you buy already for groceries. Do you buy frozen berries, juice, protein powder, flax seed, do you want those things in there? etc.. For me it wasn't because the things I put in my smoothies like frozen berries spinach, protein powder flax seed, chia seed etc.. we've been buying for a long time and we know the best prices for us to get them at.

  16. I have recently started dieting due to some added weight lately. I have found that smoothies are a great way to prolong the hunger attacks. I use splenda in them for a nice sweet taste without the calories. Thanks for the review, I am going to try some with the coconut water.

    • It can be at first Angela, buying the powder etc up front but overall it's not. Fresh spinach or kale, frozen berries etc.. it's amazing how many smoothies you can make with it all.

  18. I started making smoothies in the morning for my son before school, because he didn't want to eat breakfast! I felt horrible sending him off to school with an empty stomach and no brain food! He loves them because they taste more like a treat than something that is very nutritious and healthy for him. I have tried all of the basic recipes, but I can't wait to try the mango banana smoothie with mango coconut water! I am going to love this myself and I am sure he will too! Thanks for the recipe!

  19. I love mangoes so much that if it is very ripe and super sweet I would prefer not to mix it with other flavors. So straight up Non Flavored or vanilla yogart or cream would do the trick. Carrots, banana and ginger makes a great smoothie or juice the carrot with a little fresh ginger and blend in purred banana. I love the way you boost the nutritional value of your smoothies. I'll have to try so of those tricks Thanks.

  20. I usually make a smoothie for my before bedtime snack. My nutritionist suggested it as it helps regulate my blood sugar (I am diabetic) and I was surprised how well it did. I add cinnamon to mine and just use milk and mixed berries usually. It's gotten me off my ice cream cravings which is a good thing!

  30. Oo I should put coconut water to my smoothies! It'll give it a great flavor with the right mix of other fruits. I'm very impressed that you put in the flax, protein and probiotic supplements in your smoothies! Those are all great for daily living, so maybe it's not a bad idea. I just need to find the right protein powder. Thanks for sharing your smoothie ideas.

    • Laurel, they don't have to be high in carbs depends on what you do, some carbs are good for you, if you stick to fresh or frozen fruit, don't add juice use almond milk or water it shouldn't be that high in carbs.

  35. I have always wondered, do these really help fill you up enough to help you lose weight? What happens once you stop? I always like to know those 2 answers before I commit to something.

    • It's not all necessarily about losing weight Mary, they can be done for losing weight but I drink them for all the nutrition we get in there, the antioxidants etc.. which has helped build up our immune systems. Between the smoothies and everything else I've done my daughter has had the best school year yet for not being sick, before she was getting colds/flus all the time. So I don't drink them for weight loss any more but for the nutrition and ease of getting a power pack of nutrition in one glass.

  36. I am so very thankful for this post- I have been fighting with severe leg cramps for quite some time. My doctor could find no medical reason for my cramps. He just said I needed to incorporate foods rich in potassium. I guess I'm not very imaginative- I have just been drinking orange juice and eating lots of bananas and potatoes. I am sick of all! This opens a whole new world for me! Thanks!

  37. I didn't really get into the smoothie thing till a few years ago. I had some major health issues and I wasn't eating properly so I started making smoothies with plenty of ice and I felt much better. I just recently started adding chia seeds to help with my diet. I usually put in a teaspoon of them along with the banana, frozen berry mix and apple juice. Delicious way to start the day.

But after reading your article, it sounds like you are doing a fantastic job of creating tasty, yet healthy, smoothies. And I think it's great you are passing those healthy habits on to your husband and daughter!! I will be visiting your site more often to check out your smoothie recipes and to see if you come up with any new, tasty concoctions. Great job, keep it up!!

  51. I adore smoothies. I drink them mostly in the Spring and Summer when I can use fresh fruits and veggies that are seasonal to the States. I also use Jay Robb protein which is the best one I've found so far. I like to use an assortment of berries fresh orange juice, protein and sometimes I add flax seed or greens. Love it.

  54. I really have not tried too many smoothie mixes. I usually use vanilla yogurt w/splash of pineapple juice or cranberry or water if I have no juice in the house. I have to add ice to make it slushy. I use strawberries, blueberries, banana and sometimes substitute pineapple chunks or mango. I have used fresh fruits, as well as frozen. It is really easier with frozen, as no ice is needed. I started March 6th, 2013 to take liquid probiotics. I have had very bad vitamin/mineral deficiencies that have developed over the past couple of years. I have a new regimen of prescription vitamins, w some from health food store as well. You review has given me ideas, about the flax seed & coco water. I usually keep coconut water for my nephew, so it is usually here. I need to try the protein powder too, but I am already overweight, and have to be careful on the fruit already. Thanks for the fabo review.
