It’s been at least a few years that I made the decision to try and not use the word dieting and if I slip up occasionally and do use it I don’t feel guilty about it. The reason I don’t feel guilty is because in this house the word “dieting” does not mean starvation, fad diets and more it means our diet of eating healthy foods as much as possible. We just try to say healthy eating or good nutrition.
I admit when I was in my late 20s and early 30s I dieted, I tried fad diets, I obsessed a little bit about weight after I gained so much weight after my daughter was born. However as my daughter got older and in particular by the time she started school I realized that I was her role model, her main role model at that point and that I had to be a better example through my actions and words. I was even more determined to not use the word diet or talk about losing weight when it turned out my daughter who is quite slim really needs to gain weight.
Out went the word dieting and we focused more on healthy eating which has made a difference in our lives. My daughter who used to get sick all of the time is now the opposite she doesn’t get sick as often. Healthy eating, taking the right supplements and more has been amazing for us. Now want to empower others to take the No Dieting Oath!
Did you know that: in a recent survey commissioned by Multi-Grain Cheerios examining young women ages 10-17 revealed some compelling stats:
- 3 in 5 women have been on a diet
- 52% of girls get their information about dieting and nutrition from family members
- 1 in 5 girls under 18 is currently dieting
In order to end this cycle of destructive dieting, Multi-Grain Cheerios has launched “Generation Healthy”, a program aimed at encouraging women to recognize their self-worth and become part of the solution as a role model living a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
Here’s an important message:
“We believe that nutrition is healthier than deprivation and that dieting is harmful to us and to our children. So let’s embrace a healthy, balanced lifestyle, and empower the next generation to do the same by removing the word dieting from our lives and replacing it with words like nourished, strong, and fulfilled. Let’s use our influence to teach our children to live with healthy balance by living that way ourselves. Together, we can build a healthier future for every generation to come.”
To help create a world without dieting, Multi-Grain Cheerios is encouraging Canadians to take the first step in being a positive, healthy role model by taking the “Never Say Dieting Oath” at WorldWithoutDieting.ca.
You can watch our video of our No Dieting Oath HERE and we want you to feel inspired to take the oath too (don’t worry you don’t have to do a video if you don’t want to 🙂 ).

Dieting excessively and frequently is not healthy – can potentially deprive girls of nutrients important for their body. Also, not good for their mentality with always having to keep up with their body image through dieting.
veRONIca says
I think it is more important to help them have good self-image. They need to believe they are beautiful the way they are. Also educating them about eating healthy is important. If they are eating healthy and feel good about their bodies, then dieting will not even be an issue
Maggie says
I think its important to tell young people not to diet because they should be learning how to eat in such a way that there are no weight issues to contend with that would cause a need to diet. I am not speaking about any of the young dieters who do it for image.

Dieting can be dangerous, physically and mentally.

It is important to teach young girls to realize that their body size does not define who they are
Chelsea Klassen says
It’s so important to teach girls that eating healthy is not dieting. Dieting starts a cycle that I don’t want my child to be in.

Soozle says
It is very important, yes… We live in such a looks obsessed society that it is so easy for girls to suffer low self esteem if they are not encouraged to love themselves no matter what early on

lori b says
i think this is extremely important for girls of all ages
Tiffany says
It’s important bc girls need to know that dieting won’t guarantee happiness or improved self esteem, it doesn’t do anything to address underlying insecurity issues. Girls need to be taught, and frequently reminded, that there is beauty in diversity and to celebrate their uniqueness. The goal should be to be HEALTHY, not skinny.
Nena Sinclair says
Girls who are encouraged to diet can develop eating disorders and unhealthy eating habits. It’s much better to teach them healthy eating habits for life.
Glogirl says
I think it’s important to teach girls to love their bodies regardless of shape and size. Too often girls feel they have to fit a certain cookie cutter mold as seen through the media and peer pressure. Dieting just leads to more problems– never feeling satisfied with one’s body and constantly living in the future (ie. I’ll be happy when I lose x number of pounds).
suzi says
Because it can cause them to hate their bodies their whole lives – as someone who battled an eating disorder for years, I think that if people hadn’t focused on dieting in my life it would have been a lot different!
