Smartick Makes Learning Math Fun
I’m really excited to share our experience with Smartick. Smartick is an online mathematics program that keeps kids engaged and actually makes learning math fun. If your child has an extra fifteen minutes a day and you’re looking for a new tool in your education kit, give Smartick a try!
Math Anxiety
As a parent of a third grader, it’s important for me to keep my daughter engaged in everything she’s learning in school. Due to our recent move, she started in a new school. We realized that she was not up to speed on the math being taught in her new classroom. We quickly had to jump into division, more complex math equations and memorizing multiplication tables. Since my husband and I never seem to have enough time to explore these new math problems with her and hiring a tutor is expensive, Smartick has been helpful in easing math anxiety these past few weeks.
Virtual Fun
When you sign up, your child will be able to create their own avatar. Never underestimate the excitement of a child who gets to create their own avatar! There’s just something about it that they go nuts over. Go grab a coffee and sit down with a book because this will occupy your little one for a while!
After she chose her avatar, we explored a bit. The virtual world was a surprise to both of us and she loved this aspect of Smartick. The virtual world not only has a little home they can visit and decorate but it has a library, gym, store and even a tree house.
The program’s “ticks” are another example of how Smartick makes learning math fun. The “ticks” are earned during sessions and can then be used to purchase items (even pets!) in the virtual world. This has been a great incentive to keep my daughter logging in as often as she can so that she can continue earning her “allowance”.
Daily Sessions, Tutorials and Competitions
Smartick’s design is easy to navigate for my eight year old. She logs in on her own, starts her fifteen minute daily session and then explores the virtual world or watches a few tutorials (at my suggestion).

The curriculum is personalized to her needs, based on the results of her initial math assessment, and the daily session changes as she learns new skills. Smartick continues to challenge her as she progresses. If problems are solved incorrectly, she has the option to go back afterwards to try again. I like this aspect of the program because it builds her confidence. Even if she missed a problem the first time, she can have another shot at it. After each session, she is also able to rate the difficulty.
Every time a session is completed, I receive an email with her detailed results. It also lets you know if they didn’t complete a session so you can encourage them to finish if you like.
Although the folks at Smartick boast only needing fifteen minutes a day to master math, if your little one is like mine, they will be spending much more time playing these games. This program has eased the math anxiety my daughter has felt lately so I am one happy camper. Smartick absolutely makes learning math fun!
