Powered by Mom Blog loves to swim how about you?

Swimming is one of the best forms of exercising for several reasons. It gets all the muscles moving your arms, legs, abs, all of them as you use your whole body to swim. One of the reasons I love to swim is that it's an excellent workout but it's not hard on my joints. Many of you may have read in some of my previous posts that I have rheumatoid arthritis and as a result a I have some join damage in my wrists and knees.

It's important for everyone to get some form of exercising in but those of us with such joint damage it's just as important but sometimes a challenge to find types of exercises we can do without causing more strain on our joints. Swimming is one of these wonderful exercise and it's also why it's so good for everyone from the very young, adults, seniors and well everyone as it gets us moving. The water provides the resistance to give the muscles a good workout but it also helps protect joints. It's why you will see and probably already know why swimming is often recommended for physical therapy, those with joint problems and why many if not all aquatic centers such as Fort Lauderdale aquatics offer all types of classes for seniors. It helps loosen up stiff joints and muscles and so much more.

The physical benefits of swimming are many but I also feel that it's important for everyone to know how to swim as well. It's an important skill that can not only provide you with a form of exercise, it's a wonderful family activity to do and for various safety reasons we should all know how to swim. It's an invaluable skill in so many ways.

How old were you when you first learned to swim? Leave us a comment we'd love to know 🙂

  1. Swimming is the best! It takes all the strain off my joints - I have arthritis. There is just something so soothing about being in the water. I learned to swim when I was 7. I never did learn how to float on my back though - my dad was trying to teach me to float, and had his arms under me, and swore he wouldn't go. Well, I believed him, and inhaled deeply just as he DID let go, and swallowed what felt like half the pool. Bad experience, and I never really did trust dad completely after that. So, although I am a pretty good swimmer, and can dive, I still can't float on my back! Gee!

  2. I know by four -years old I was swimming well for a four year old. I loved to be underwater then and I still do now. It is an excellent exercise swimming and now that I'm older, the joints bother me as well. I believe that everyone should know how to swim properly. Some day one of us may then save our own life or that of someone else.

  4. I love to swim. My family definitely takes every opportunity to get in our pool. It is a great way to exercise but also to spend family time together having fun and playing games or simply relaxing and having a quiet evening with my husband.

  6. I took swimming lessons when I was in second grade and it is something that I regularly did up until about 10 years ago. I saw this post and shared it with my sister because we were discussing the other day how much we wanted to start swimming again. My goal for the new year is to get back in the pool!

  10. I didn't have swimming lessons. My mother and a distant relative taught me. I can pass to swim in the deep end but would never go off a diving board (except cannonball style). I wanted to make sure my daughter had lessons. She joined swim team at 7 and qualified for state. First meet at age 8 she qualified the first meet for state with her relay team. Yeah! We are a swimming family!

  14. I grew up in California. Everyone had swimming pools. My mom taught us to swim early. My son has been really sick with kidney disease. He had no energy to get much exercise. Swimming encourages him to be active without taking too much out of him or putting too much strain on his body. Besides, it's fun!

  18. I recently had double knee replacement, and the doctor recommended swimming as a good form of exercise. I have never done a lot of swimming (living in the country I was not near a swimming pool), but I have been considering joining the YMCA and trying to make more of an effort to get there and swim.

  22. I love swimming. I wish I had the opportunity to do it more often. It's the best exercise, especially for someone like me that needs low impact, as this is about as low impact as you can get. Thanks for the article and information!

  24. I learned to swim before I could even walk (according to my mother). I also have RA and I swim 3 times a week at the Easter Seals warm water pool. I get cranky when the pool is closed for holidays like this week and next.

  25. I'm not sure how old I was when I learned how to swim, but I remember always being able to swim ever since I was little. I grew up in SoCal and we had a pool in our back yard.
I wish I had the time to just go swimming solo, enjoy the water, while getting some fun exercise at the same time!

  26. I can actually remember swimming in the lakes where I grew up in NJ, and I had to be only 3 or 4 at the most. When my family moved to Arizona, we bought a house with a pool, and mom immediately got my brother and me signed up for swimming lessons. I have always loved to swim, and absolutely love snorkeling!

  28. I'm not sure I ever really learned to swim, at least not the right way. I'd guess probably around 12 years old. I love to swim. It would be so wonderful to have an indoor swimming pool, I can't imagine!
