Powered by Mom Blog loves to swim how about you?
Swimming is one of the best forms of exercising for several reasons. It gets all the muscles moving your arms, legs, abs, all of them as you use your whole body to swim. One of the reasons I love to swim is that it's an excellent workout but it's not hard on my joints. Many of you may have read in some of my previous posts that I have rheumatoid arthritis and as a result a I have some join damage in my wrists and knees.
It's important for everyone to get some form of exercising in but those of us with such joint damage it's just as important but sometimes a challenge to find types of exercises we can do without causing more strain on our joints. Swimming is one of these wonderful exercise and it's also why it's so good for everyone from the very young, adults, seniors and well everyone as it gets us moving. The water provides the resistance to give the muscles a good workout but it also helps protect joints. It's why you will see and probably already know why swimming is often recommended for physical therapy, those with joint problems and why many if not all aquatic centers such as Fort Lauderdale aquatics offer all types of classes for seniors. It helps loosen up stiff joints and muscles and so much more.
The physical benefits of swimming are many but I also feel that it's important for everyone to know how to swim as well. It's an important skill that can not only provide you with a form of exercise, it's a wonderful family activity to do and for various safety reasons we should all know how to swim. It's an invaluable skill in so many ways.
How old were you when you first learned to swim? Leave us a comment we'd love to know 🙂
Swimming is the best! It takes all the strain off my joints - I have arthritis. There is just something so soothing about being in the water. I learned to swim when I was 7. I never did learn how to float on my back though - my dad was trying to teach me to float, and had his arms under me, and swore he wouldn't go. Well, I believed him, and inhaled deeply just as he DID let go, and swallowed what felt like half the pool. Bad experience, and I never really did trust dad completely after that. So, although I am a pretty good swimmer, and can dive, I still can't float on my back! Gee!
Ahhh....swimming is the best. It is the most fun way to exercise as far as I am concerned!! : )
I know by four -years old I was swimming well for a four year old. I loved to be underwater then and I still do now. It is an excellent exercise swimming and now that I'm older, the joints bother me as well. I believe that everyone should know how to swim properly. Some day one of us may then save our own life or that of someone else.
I actually learned to swim this year at 33 yrs. I had a near death experience at 11 and never went back in the water until my own kids needed to learn.
I love to swim. My family definitely takes every opportunity to get in our pool. It is a great way to exercise but also to spend family time together having fun and playing games or simply relaxing and having a quiet evening with my husband.
My cousin taught me to swim when I was 11. I wish I had a pool so I could go swimming whenever I want. It is my favorite form of exercise, but I haven't been in years.
i love swimming, i actually lose weight because of swimming is the great way to enjoy exercise and fun too
I took swimming lessons when I was in second grade and it is something that I regularly did up until about 10 years ago. I saw this post and shared it with my sister because we were discussing the other day how much we wanted to start swimming again. My goal for the new year is to get back in the pool!
I love to exercise in our pool during the summer. It is so much better on my joints and back. I miss it so bad now that it is winter. I have bee thinking about joining the YMCA or somewhere to do water aerobics. Thanks for your info.
I never learned to swim officially. I can keep float if needed but I am not a great swimmer. I love being in the water though.
We all have Arthritis, my dad has it the worse. I wish I could convince him to go swimming. But he's 82 and not that interested.
I love to swim, but don;t have access anymore
I enjoy swimming, it's even more fun now cause I have a daughter to teach to swim. 🙂
swimming is just about the one and only sport that I have done most of my life and actually liked
We love to swim as a family. The kids love it to, so much so that they take swimming lessons year round!
I was in the water even as a baby! Love to swim. : )
I didn't have swimming lessons. My mother and a distant relative taught me. I can pass to swim in the deep end but would never go off a diving board (except cannonball style). I wanted to make sure my daughter had lessons. She joined swim team at 7 and qualified for state. First meet at age 8 she qualified the first meet for state with her relay team. Yeah! We are a swimming family!
My whole family enjoys swimming. It's not just great exercise but it's fun too. The only problem is we don't have a pool close by.
I have Cerebral Palsy and swimming is the best thing i can do.
I was in Mommy & Me classes at 2, and learned on my own at 4. It's a fun and necessary skill all kids should learn!
I think I was around 6 when I learned how to swim. Our neighbor growing up had a pool and taught swimming lessons. So since My Mother and her were good friends we were in the pool almost daily during the summer.
I love to swim, too. I have fibromyalgia and swimming is the only form of exercise that brings me relief.
Oh I love to swim, and ur right, great exercises! Thats my favorite thing to do is go camping and get to hang out n the sun and the water.
I grew up in California. Everyone had swimming pools. My mom taught us to swim early. My son has been really sick with kidney disease. He had no energy to get much exercise. Swimming encourages him to be active without taking too much out of him or putting too much strain on his body. Besides, it's fun!
I love swimming, I grew up in Florida and was on a swimming team before I hit kindergarden. My son loves to swim too I passed it on to him as well, he is 2 and swims with arm floaties!
I love to do swim aerobics they have classes at the high school two days a week 🙂
Unfortunately , I don't know how to swim till now ,,I am afraid to get into the water , besides I get lots of cramps in my legs since my childhood!
I’m ready for summer so I can swim! I can not wait for summer!!
I was 5, In Ocean City, Md 🙂 Ty
I'm ready for summer so I can swim! I love it and it's great exercise!
I wanna say I was 9 when I learned to swim. I loved swimming as a child and now as an adult i often forget to swim in the summer months! I also tend to forget that there are indoor pools where I can swim, as well as take aqua aerobics and aqua zumba classes! i will have to look into those more.. i am a fish once i get into the water!!
I recently had double knee replacement, and the doctor recommended swimming as a good form of exercise. I have never done a lot of swimming (living in the country I was not near a swimming pool), but I have been considering joining the YMCA and trying to make more of an effort to get there and swim.
Swimming is one of my favorites. A few years ago I had foot surgery on both feet and it was all I could do. I can't agree with you more.
I was on a swim team from the time I was 4 until I was 17- I do love to swim, I just never seem to do it anymore
I love swimming and so does my daughter! Swimming is great also because it takes all the weight off your muscles.
Love to swim with kids and grandkids so fun
I love swimming and so does my daughter. Swimming is also great because it takes all the weight off your muscles!
i took swimming lessons when i was a kid but feel like i could use a few more 🙂 i never really got the whole lap swimming thing down. i do love the water, and love going to the hot springs! it would be great to take those lessons so i could go swimming for exercise too!!
I took lessons when I was 11 years old, however, I love swimming under water and have issues when my head comes up. I do love being in the water, helps my arthritis 🙂
I started when I was 4!
Was given swimming lessons at 6 years old. LOVE to swim!
i come from a family of swimmers - i learned to swim on my own when i was under 5 - when i was 4, i could swim the width of a pool. 🙂 Swimming is still one of my favorite things to do.
I love swimming. I wish I had the opportunity to do it more often. It's the best exercise, especially for someone like me that needs low impact, as this is about as low impact as you can get. Thanks for the article and information!
Love to swim - good form of exercise
I love the water but I float better than I swim LOL

I learned to swim in college. I was 18 years old. I love to swim and my husband and I have an inground swimming pool at our home. Swimming is my favorite excersize.
I learned to swim before I could even walk (according to my mother). I also have RA and I swim 3 times a week at the Easter Seals warm water pool. I get cranky when the pool is closed for holidays like this week and next.
I'm not sure how old I was when I learned how to swim, but I remember always being able to swim ever since I was little. I grew up in SoCal and we had a pool in our back yard.
I wish I had the time to just go swimming solo, enjoy the water, while getting some fun exercise at the same time!
I can actually remember swimming in the lakes where I grew up in NJ, and I had to be only 3 or 4 at the most. When my family moved to Arizona, we bought a house with a pool, and mom immediately got my brother and me signed up for swimming lessons. I have always loved to swim, and absolutely love snorkeling!
i first learned to swim in a small pool my parents had when i was little. my siblings swam before me and when i started, i just loved it and still do. you're absolutely right: it's a great exercise, especially for those with joint pain.
I'm not sure I ever really learned to swim, at least not the right way. I'd guess probably around 12 years old. I love to swim. It would be so wonderful to have an indoor swimming pool, I can't imagine!
Swimming is my favorite form of exercise.
