Powered by Mom Blog Talks About Taking Care of Your Cat’s Paws
I have to admit when we added our first cat to our family several years ago I was not as aware of how to take care of cats. I thought it was simple, feed them, clean their cat litter, take them to the vet and of course love them. As we grew together I learned things like how to take care of a cat’s paws, it’s something I find that some pet owners don’t realize but would do if they knew about it.
It is important that you constantly check the bottom of a cat’s paws to keep them healthy and happy. Here are some things that you should keep an eye open for on your cats’ paws.
- Cuts and Scratches- Cats are inquisitive in nature and tend to investigate everything whether they are indoor or outdoor cats. Make sure the check the bottom of their paw treads to ensure that there are no cuts or scratches that do not heal.
- Hair between Their Paws- If your cat has long hair make sure to check between their toes for any long protruding hair. Talk to your vet about how to trim hair that has grown between the toes if you notice your cat licking between her toes constantly.
- Dirt and Debris- Check between the paws to make sure that there is no cat litter embedded between the toes. Remove any dirt or other debris from the paw pads so that there is no chance of a bacterial infection.
- Provide a Scratching Post- Provide your cat with a scratching post so that they can use it to keep their nails in good condition. A cat will claw at carpets, furniture, and sometimes even wood if a scratching post is not provided. New nails grow underneath the old nails and scratching posts help cats to remove the outer nail sheath.
- Trim Their Nails- You should trim their nails at regular intervals. Use a pair of high quality nail clippers for pets to clip them with. Make sure that you do not cut to the pink. If this should happen apply cornstarch to stop the bleeding.
