I recently had the pleasure to review this enchanting story. It's a Christmas story, it's a story about sisters, it's a story about family, it's a story about magic and and 🙂 That is what is so amazing about this book, it seamlessly weaves together so many wonderful themes. The story centers around a young girl Nicole who lives in Austria and is given a "magic" candy cane. The story unfolds from there where you learn more about Nicole, her sister Ashley and her parents and the many other wonderful characters in the story.
It is by no means a sappy story as there are some interesting twists and turns including a house fire and some other troubling occurences but they are part of what keep you riveted to the story. I loved the character development as Nicole totally came across as the moody teen-ager, sometimes cranky, sometimes sweet, sometimes the sparring sibling the writing easily helped create those vivid images and brought the characters to life.
I don't want to spoil the story for anyone so I"m not going to give away too much here than what I've already revealed. I will say that I thought it was wonderful to learn more about another country's traditions and I loved that there were recipes and pictures of the items at the end of the book. I thought this was a wonderful touch because we were able to learn more about these foods that were mentioned in the book. What a wonderful idea!
I thought it would be wonderful to include this you-tube video of the real life sisters who inspired the story The Taste of Snow!
A good read, I enjoyed it although I personally feel that it's more suited to older children maybe 10 year's old and up but each child is different. It's a story that an adult could read to children between 7-9 year's old I think. Overall a wonderful story.
