Powered by Mom Blog shares her joys of Motherhood and wishes it for all who want to be moms!

Below is one of my favourite pictures of my daughter and I 🙂

mom & daughter 2

As I get spoiled today and even this evening for Mother's Day I think of all the joys I've experienced and yes the tribulations too of motherhood. For someone who wasn't sure she wanted to be a mom at first I now can't imagine having a life without my precious daughter. The joys of hearing her first words, learning to walk, calling me mama, saying I'm the best mom in the world (my personal favourite of course) and even if the tribulations of next to little or no sleep when she was a baby, the argumentative tween that she can be sometimes and the rolling of the eyes.

Oh yes while I won't admit it to her I will even treasure the eye rolling I receive (something I try to remember when she does it) as it's all a part of motherhood. Being a mom has taught me the patience I never knew I had, the sheer joy that comes from watching your child grow, learn and overcome their own challenges and so much more. I'm so lucky and I'm even luckier that I had the choice to become a parent. I didn't have any troubles becoming pregnant unlike the 1 in 6 families in British Columbia who struggle with infertility.

The need for public funding of in vitro fertilization (IVF) has now become a subject near and dear to my heart as my eyes have been open to the struggle of others here in BC and all across Canada. You can read my previous articles on some of the staggering statistics HERE as to why IVF funding not only helps families that can't afford it on their own but it can also save us money to support such funding due to multiple birth complications.

I know I'm not alone in thinking that IVF should be funded as 73% of British Columbians also believe in vitro fertilization treatments should be publicly funded. It means giving all British Columbians, regardless of income or geography, the opportunity to build their families safely. Families are British Columbia's foundation. Strong families help build strong communities, a thriving economy, and a more secure future for the next generations.

  • The average cost for in vitro fertilization treatments is between $5800-$8000, not including the additional several thousand dollars for required medication. The cost of these treatments lead many families to choose transferring multiple-embryos in the hope of increasing their chance of becoming pregnant. As a result, BC has a multiple birth rate of about 31% compared to rates between 5 – 10% in other jurisdictions which tie public funding to the practice of single embryo transfer.
  • Being pregnant with twins or triplets creates significant health risks to mother and baby, not only during pregnancy and birth but often for the rest of the child's life.
  • Infertility is a serious medical condition that affects both male and female partners.

  • Treatments, although often successful, are physically demanding and expensive.

  • The cost of these treatments lead many families to choose transferring multiple-embryos in the hope of increasing their chance of becoming pregnant.

  • BC has one of the highest multiple birth rates of all the provinces in Canada – approximately 28%.

  • In Quebec, the multiple-birth rate has declined to between 5-8% with the introduction of public funding for IVF treatments. That program has been in place for over two years.

  5. My niece went for IVF and she is the proud mother of twin girls - It is too bad that the cost is so high and may not be possible for everyone that desires a child. We should lobby so the insurance companies add IVF to their covered expenses.

  6. Such a beautiful pic of the two of you! About parenthood... honestly, there are moments when I want to pull my hair out and run away screaming, but then that moment passes and I feel like every minute is worth it. My kids are wonderful and I would never trade them for the world.

  14. Thank you for this. My husband and I have been struggling with infertility for over a year now and it's looking like IVF might be our only option. Here in the US, insurance mandates vary from state to state and in mine, nothing infertility-related is covered. IVF is $16,000 and the local fertility center here does not accept payment plans. I am very glad to see others raising awareness of this issue because I have spent many nights crying and wondering why I have to pay so much for something most women get for free.

  15. Thank you for sharing. I never would have thought about the public funding IVF. Seems like a worthy cause to me, but I wonder how much support it will actually get.

  16. $5800-$8000 for in vitro fertilization treatments is such a financial burden. Why is it when there is a medical procedure that can help someone or cure someone they take advantage by charging so much people can't afford it. It should be regulated. I hope they get the public funding.
P.S It's a great picture of you and your Daughter.

  21. This is great information to know. I know many who struggle with having children but not being one of them myself it is not something we are forced to think about but a very important issue. Everyone should have the opportunity to try for a child and should not be denied the choice based on cost alone. It just isn't fair. Thank you for bringing this issue to light.

  22. I also wasn't sure I wanted to have a child. Well, I did have one, and like you, I wouldn't trade him for the world. Yes there have been troubling times, but in the end when they look you in the eye and say why didn't you ever give up on me, I can honestly say, because I'm your Mom and I love you! There are no restrictions!

  23. My Aunt went through IVF 16 years ago in the US. I remember everything she went through, my hats off to the ladies who do whatever it takes to become the mother they dream of being, I had it easy in comparison.

  27. Hello again and thanks for another good post that really succinctly wraps this issue all up. It is a crucial time for BC and it is obviously a cost saving proposal. Public funding for IVF just makes sense.
