Although many people give the gift of flowers to their friends and loved ones, they may not be aware of the symbolic meaning that many of these plants hold.  Passed down from ancient times, these plants were often used to tell a story or deliver a message.  The ancient Japanese called the art Hanakotoba.  King Charles II brought the art of interpreting a flower’s inner meaning to Sweden from Persia sometime in the 17th Century.  You can carry on the tradition of delivering a message with your bouquet, or you can simply surround yourself with the plants whose meanings you want to make present in your life.

Spiritual Meanings

Flowers are infused with distinctive characteristics, symbolism and meaning.  These plants can bring about special spiritual reminders of qualities that one might like to manifest in their own lives.

  • Aster:  love and patience.  Its rich fragrance was thought to drive away evil serpents.
  • Baby’s Breath:  modesty and sweet beauty.  Baby’s Breath is a reminder that true beauty must come from within.
  • Basil:  integration and discipline.  Fill your life with many different hobbies and don’t always just stick with one thing.
  • Buttercup:  power of words and self -worth.  Once something is said, it can never be retracted.  Only speak words that will bring about good.
  • Cactus: riches and hard work.  If people work hard enough at something, their efforts will be rewarded.  Don’t ever give up.
  • Clover:  luck and love.  Show appreciation when good things happen in your life.
  • Dahlia: dignity and self-worth.  Hold your head high and walk into any situation with confidence.
  • Daisy:  creativity and inner-strength.  Never underestimate your creative powers and what they can accomplish.
  • Freesia: innocence and friendship.  Among the most fragrant.
  • Heather:  admiration and good luck.  Heather was believed to have protective powers in ancient times.
  • Iris: higher inspiration.  If you keep an open mind, you can receive the guidance of the angels.
  • Lily: birth and humility.  When you help someone and no credit is given, you will receive the greatest reward.
  • Orchid: luxury, beauty and strength.  The orchid was a symbol of luxurious beauty in the Victorian Era.
  • Peony: romance, prosperity and honor.  Peonies symbolize a happy marriage and good fortune.
  • Rose: love, strength and passion.  Savor the beauty that is in all things.  Be passionate about things.
  • Sunflower: happiness and opportunities.  Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way.
  • Tulip: joy and tenderness.  Each color of tulip represents a different distinct meaning.  Yellow represents cheer, white is a symbol of forgiveness, and purple depicts royalty.

While each flower holds a powerful meaning, you can speak the words of your heart when giving them to a friend or loved one.  When a situation arises in which you can’t find the right words to describe how you are feeling, try giving a beautiful bouquet that will speak the message for you.  Whether you are giving hospital flowers to a sick friend, saying good-bye to someone who has passed away, or giving hope to someone who is struggling in life, a gorgeous arrangement can move the soul.  Arrange your message in a beautiful bouquet today.
