Powered by Mom Blog's family needs to organize their garage how about you?
Like many people I'm sure our garage is in serious need of some organization. Our vehicles have never been parked in our garage and in fact one side of our two car garage was converted into an office for my husband. My hubby is a contractor and as a result we have various equipment and supplies in our garage and a few sheds as well. On top of my husband's tools and other work equipment our garage also has household items stored in it like Christmas decorations and more. We simply do not have enough storage space when you combine all of my husband's work equipment and household items that aren't used every day. As a result our garage is a mess so a garage organization system would not only be appreciated we seriously need it!
I practically drool when I see pictures of garages like the one above, so neat and tidy and even a floor that shines. Our garage will never look like that however, we could use those cabinets! Love them, we could definitely utilize several cabinets which would enable us to have a much better organized garage. I'd love to get things off the ground and put away in cabinets, how wonderful would that be. I know there are several garage organization systems out there, we just have to decide on what we can do and afford but I know it will be worth it once we do!
What do you do to organize your garage?
I don't have a garage at my house, but I have a HUGE storage shed...and this would be such a help...it was my fall goal to clean it out and rearrange it... now it has become my spring goal...lol.. I would have done it in the summer but there were too many days over a 100, and I lack that much interest... 🙂
Now, my garage has gotten even more messier since Christmas! We threw out all the boxes and extra things from Christmas, and I fear that this is not going to get clean until Spring. I do not like a messy garage! To organize my garage I have put up hooks to hand things from and I have put up cabinets that store a lot of my things. And I put a shelf system under the porch to where I store seasonal items!
Our garage isn't too bad... It's small, so there is space for my car, an upright freezer, a refrigerator, a generator, my hubby's workbench, and a couple of wall mounted cabinets. Any time I leave anything else in there, my husband has a little temper tantrum. The basement, however, is another story. That's where all the outgrown and out of season clothes, all the kids school stuff from past grades (yes, I keep it ALL), seasonal decorations, crafting supplies, gift wrapping supplies, and pantry "back stock" are ALL stored. Once upon a time, there was a carefully organized system, but as the stash grows, the system dies. I need to get more shelves and more bins. When everything has a place, I'm very good about putting things where they "live". But when things don't have previously established homes, I just stash them where they fit, which eventually leads to complete chaos.
My junk in the garage keeps me from parking my vehicles in it.
My family doesn't have a garage that's cluttered. We have a two room basement that's cluttered,
There is everything down there such as holiday decorations, toys that the kids don't play with anymore.
There are also a lot of things that we haven't seen in years because there is just so much down there.
This is just what I need. Love it
this would have been great when i had my house and it had a garage thanks.
We don't have a garage (for the reason of our only using it as a storage area). So we bought a place with a basement. The storage/organization would be awesome down there! And I wouldn't mind seeing a Ducati in there either! 😉
Great ideas.
When we moved I was so excited we finally had a garage until it started to look like a storage shed with things just thrown everywhere with no rhyme or reason to any of it. I searched high and low until I found an organization sytem that actually worked and allowed us to ultize the space properly. And although it looks nothing like the one in the picture , cabinets are a definite must have as well as plenty of space saving shelving. It's now a place I don't dread walking through or into where I can easily store bulk products like paper towels, toilet paper, even my broom, mops, swiffer, ect...found it's own home hanging neatly from the wall by hooks hung off of cork board, right by the door so it's just an arm length away. Since redoing, my fiancee even goes through the garage now instead of the front and leaves his boots right where they belong,...in HIS garage right alongside all his tools and all sorts of odds and ends that now have a home other than in our kitchen drawers! LOL
thanks for the great article. I try to keep things in tubs. They kind where you can see what you have stored.
We have cabinets off the floor and then a few plastic bins we put stuff in along the wall and lots of hooks on the wall!
Instead of buying expensive tool chests, I keep my tools in bags. Cheaper and more portable.
I don't have a garage but because I am a nut for organizing this is something I do for my in-laws every summer!
I dont have a garage but my family absolutely needs to organize the rest of the house! Its insane how unorganized things are here!
We've never parked our cars in our garage either. We have workout equipment, a drum set, Christmas decorations in many boxes, etc. We are looking to invest in some cabinets and overhead storage systems to get organized...someday, but there are some very interesting garage organization ideas on Pinterest that I have pinned and hope to do when hubby is off for Christmas break.
I don't have garage, but I would really have one to organize. I just love cleaning too much, I guess.
My mom's garage needs to be cleaned! She can't even park her car in there because of all the stuff!
Yes! My husband has cluttered it up just a bit with his Star Wars stuff. Gotta get organized for all of us. We have christmas stuff, our daughter's toy jeep and bike, and so many other things. Maybe for the new year....
I really wish my garage would look that great!! ,pim still missing walls and all the wiring is exposed. I am thinking of buying pegboards to close up some of those walls into hang my tools and such on. My bf also built a large table hooked on th wall that flips up to park our car and a shelling unit for all my couponing finds 🙂
I want my garage to look shiny like that. I have boxes of stuff in the garage, I need to go through it and get rid of it. Although I can park both cars in the garage it still looks like a mess.
We're in the process of building a two car garage. We will be building our own shelves and storage places and yet I'm guessing it might stay clean and organized for maybe three months.
I don't have a garage but need to organize a spare room and utility building
Wow...I can't wait to have a garage again. I am house hunting next spring and a garage is a must. Organization will be key. The last garage I had though I could find things there was no logic to where things were hiding.
We not only have a garage that is a mess (floods every time it rains) but a 4 foot space beside it that runs the length of the garage (detatched garage at back of property) but also what my fiance' refers to a maids quarters (about the size of a normal bedroom with a half-bath) that are all full of stuff. We have never been able to utilize the garage in the 7 years I have lived here, and there is a path down the middle of the maids quarters. The 4 foot wide area is where I have resigned myself to keeping all the yard equipment (mower, leaf blower, weed wacker, trimmer, chain saw and extension ladder). The maids quarters contain all my Christmas decorations including the 7 ft pre-lit tree, garland, wreath and 2 small pre-lit trees we put on our front porch and about 9 boxes of other decorations for inside the house. It is packed with things he didn't want to get rid of when he inherited his grandmothers' house which we eventually sold. I think come spring, we are either going to have a big garage sale, or I am going to start selling some of the things on ebay and craig's list.
As for storage, when I lived in MI with my ex, he built a loft area in the garage above where the door came up, with retractable stairs. Quite handy he was. As well as a set of 4 very deep and large shelves just inside the door to the breeze way that connected the house to the garage. We also had a large unfinished basement in which he built me shelves from one end to the other on one wall. I knew exactly where everything was and how to get to it at any time day or night.. But here is another question. Some day soon... I am hoping by the end of summer break 2013 (fiance' is a teacher) we will have our mess under control and be able to keep it that way. But it's going to take a lot of hard work and me staying on him to get it cleaned up.
I have a fairly large house so not everything is stored in the detached garage, yet in the 2 1/2 car garage there is only room for one car! The rest is full of tools, hoses, snow-blowers, a garden tiller, old and new lawn mowers, this list goes on. We do have one wall of shelves that keeps some things off the ground, but those are not organized (yet)!
One bike hangs from a hook on the ceiling! I also dream of an organized garage...
OMG, I need to organize my garage so bad, thanks for the inspiration:)
I swear i been cleaning my garage my all life, thanks for the great info.
With the 6 of us, there is always something that needs reorganizing! I don't have a garage, but if I did, I am sure it would be on the list! haha
Our garage is packed. I keep thinking we need to tackle it. Organize it. But I am afraid to try.
