What's Your Social Germ Network? Check out the interactive quiz below.

As parents whether you're a parent of a baby or a teenager we all worry about our kids being healthy, which also means that we need to be healthy. Part of having a healthy lifestyle is taking preventative action, limiting the nasty germs that can bring about colds and the flu by having healthy, cleaning habits. I know that all parents know and teach their children to wash their hands, clean up and wipe down surfaces, in fact many of us are very diligent about it but it can be time consuming.

Sian 2004Let's make things easier on ourselves and our kids, limiting the germs and cleaning surfaces, toys and more doesn't always have to be a chore. There are some great tips and tricks that we can do to limit our social germ network without feeling like we're constantly cleaning well everything. I admit when my daughter was a toddler she wanted to put everything in her mouth, I mean everything from toys to shoes. Yes you read that correctly, she would try to put the shoes she was wearing on her feet right into her mouth. While I'd admired her flexibility I was not impressed with the literal foot in mouth situation.

In the past when my daughter was a toddler I was constantly wiping down surfaces, cleaning her toys like the one in her mouth above and disinfecting on a regular basis. I used a lot of cloths back in the day to wipe things down, even spraying vinegar which is not one of my favorite scents. Toys that were safe to put in the dishwasher were put in there and if not then a dip in a hot water sink. I wish I had had something more convenient at the time such as the Lysol disinfecting wipes.

Lysol

The Lysol disinfecting wipes makes cleaning this kitchen and bathroom counters a breeze and my favorite ones the lemon and lime above smell a lot better than vinegar in my opinion. Now instead of my endless supply of rags and spray bottle of vinegar I just keep a container of this wipes on the kitchen counter. My daughter may be older but that doesn't mean we all should't be conscientious of our social germ network.

I'm also sharing some tips from Ali Larter as several of these are ones that used in the past and do still use even today. There are some great tips for everyone, especially those with little ones.

  1. Create a Germ Free Runway. My kids’ curiosity and desire to explore is high these days. Whether they are crawling, playing, or running around, they’re constantly coming into contact with the floors in our house. One of the simplest ways to help create a healthier runway for their play is to keep germs at a minimum outside and have guests take off their shoes before entering the home.
  2. Get on Baby’s Level. Baby proofing your home may seem like an obvious step as a new mom, but through my two babies, I’ve learned that you need to get on baby’s level to do this effectively! Crawl around the floor and look for things they might find appealing at their eye level.
  3. Know when to disinfect. In addition to regularly disinfecting commonly touched surfaces, it’s important to disinfect areas after making a mess. When I’m cooking with my kids, and we accidentally break raw eggs on the counter, that’s a mess that needs to be cleaned up and disinfected! Raw eggs are at risk of housing bacteria that cause foodborne illnesses, which is definitely something a mom wants to avoid.
  4.  Schedule Regular Social activities…for YOU. With a new baby in the home, it’s inevitable that your social life takes a backseat. While I know it can be hard being away from your baby even for a minute, it’s so important to socialize outside the home. Whether it be a night out with the girls or even just a date night with you partner, keeping your social life alive helps keeps your mind and outlook healthy.
