What do you do with your old CDs and DVDs?

This post may contain affiliate links. Read my disclosure policy.

If you're like me you have a ton of old CDs sitting around and possibly some DVDs you no longer want. After all with the world of streaming movies and downloading music we don't seem to use or need CDs so what do you do with them?

music magpie

I have an absolute ton of CDs and I mean a ton, way, way back when I worked at a popular local music store that also had movies amongst other things so my CD collection is quite vast. However I never listen to them any more for the most part. I've downloaded my favorite ones onto my iTunes and now listen to my music on my iPhone or on my desktop computer. I don't want to throw them away as I don't want them ending up in landfills so what to do with them? Hmmm

Well here comes Music Magpie where you can sell your CDs, DVDs and games, sound interesting? It is really interesting as it's free to use, there are no auction or sellers fees AND there's free shipping. yes FREE , FREE not like Ebay and other places where you have to pay fees to list or when you sell. I think it sounds so interesting and even if I get just a little it of money for CDs and DVDs it is definitely better than just throwing things out.

I'll give some away of course but a little bit of money is always appreciated, every bit counts so I can get that Starbucks mocha or frappe here and there :).

What CDs, DVDs or games to you have around the house that you want to get rid of and would like to get a bit of money for? It doesn't hurt to check out Music Magpie and it could be a bit of cash in your pocket. There aren't any other services I know of that have FREE shipping and don't charge seller's fees. If you want to find out what Music Magpie is all bout see more here.

Let us know how you like it!

  1. That is a wonderful idea about the cds/dvds..because you can only watch a movie sooo many times than its time to get rid of them let someone else enjoy them!! excellent idea the same goes for music/cds too..:)

  2. This is great information because we move a lot and selling things to people who are also trying to sell the same things is not advantageous. We are stationed overseas, so the buying population is small for our dvds etc.

  3. What a great idea! I have a ton of CD's/DVD's... some of my music collection is 25 years old! I'd say I only have listened to about 2-3% of my CD's in the last 5 years. Would be great to get rid of them, but I don't have the time or patience for eBay or a garage sale. Definitely will check them out!

  4. I have about 200 CDs but I still listen to them. I don't have an iPhone or any other gadget. For me is if it ain't broke don't fix it. I have a CD player in my living room and bdrm so I listen to them. I also have lots of movies I don't watch all the time so I'll probably check this out for those. I was selling them at garage sales for $2. Thank you for sharing 🙂

  6. really great idea! so glad there is an option besides a trashcan. such a waste to have to get rid of the quantities of music & movies people have and have to toss every time a new technology comes along. when i think of all the 8-tracks, beta, vhs, audio cassettes, 45's, 78's, albums and now cd and dvds that ended up in a landfill.....

  7. Great Concept! And like you said, even just getting a little bit of money is nice, especially for something that is just taking up space and you don't use. Thanks for the idea.

  11. I have sold a CD's and DVD's online in the past. I tend to hang onto the CD's we have for the occasions when the MP3 music player get corrupted. I have thought of starting a little local exchange where people in our community could trade movies and music they no longer want for some the do. MAgpie sounds like a really neat concept I want to check out though.

  12. I either sell them when I am having a garage sale or, I Donate them to charities. Or, with kids cds & dvds i also donate them to local daycare centers & also churches who have daycare centers. And, especially a new daycare just opening up they would love to get them & you can get a slip of paper from them and use them as a tax write off under charitable donations!!

  14. I gave my old CD's to my daughter who made an art project out of them. She glued them to a board face down and had her friends write on them.

  23. I have no idea why, but I just do not have the heart to throw away all my old Cd's & DVD's. I have alot of them too. They are sitting in a box in my closet, where every now and then I'll pull them out and listen to them, or watch a DVD I haven't seen in awhile.

  24. Our old cd and dvd is expansive as well. I just keep adding to the pile and often wondered what to do with all of them. I wasn't aware of this solution until now and I'm sure I can enlighten family and friends as well.

  26. I have plenty of those old CD's that I also have downloaded on iTunes. Teachers at school and church use them for craft projects, but I just cannot imagine my Janis Joplin or Bob Seger, or other precious CD's being used for a craft project. So, I packed them all away in totes and stored them. Selling them is a great idea and I know there must be someone out there that will enjoy them as much as I do. Thanks for the info.

  27. I need to take my old CD and DVD and sell them at Music Magpie.com because I can make some money and I am not using these items anymore, and this sounds like a lot easier thing to do then sell them at a yard sale. I will have to look into this awesome site!

If you have CDs or DVDs that are scratched beyond repair, you can hang them in your garden as a deterrent for birds (so they do not eat the fruit you are growing).
