I’ve been using essential oils to make my own cleaners for years. They’re just as effective, all-natural, affordable, and smell great.
Essential oil sprays make for a wonderful way to tackle your spring cleaning. I think you’ll love them so much that you’ll never go back to that other way.

Here are my favourite recipes for the best essential oil spray blends for spring cleaning:
All-Purpose Cleaner
Every household wants that go-to cleaner to keep nearby for use on most everything. This AP cleaner has a fresh clean scent and is a potent disinfectant. Ideal for hard surfaces, this all-purpose cleaner can be used all throughout the home.
Remember though that while we’re recommending what essential oils are good for spring cleaning and list 10 of them in this article, it’s not limited to just these 10 essential oils. You can try other ones just make sure to read up on them and make sure they are good to use for the type of cleaning you want to do.
In a glass spray bottle combine the following:
- 2 tablespoon baking soda
- ½ cup white vinegar
- 5 drops Lemon essential oil
- 4 drops Tea Tree essential oil
- 2 drops Cardamom essential oil
Fill the rest of the bottle with water and shake well. Easy to use; spray, wipe and allow to dry.

Windows and Mirror Cleaner
Because of the addition of alcohol, this blend leaves behind an impressive streak-free shine. It’s safe to use on glass, windows, mirrors etc.
In a glass spray bottle (8oz or more is recommended) combine the following:
- ½ cup white vinegar
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional)
- ½ cup vodka or rubbing alcohol
- 5 drops Peppermint or Spearmint essential oil
- 3 drops Lime essential oil
- 2 drops Lavender essential oil
Fill the rest of the bottle with water and shake well. Spray and wipe clean.
Note: You can omit the vodka or rubbing alcohol however, this is what allows the cleaner to evaporate quickly, making this recipe streak-free.
Bathroom Cleaner #1
This germ-fighting spray blend is best used in the bathroom and will disinfect tubs, showers and sinks. When used regularly, this bathroom cleaner is highly effective in preventing the buildup of mold and bacteria that can accumulate in damp spaces.
In a 16 oz glass spray bottle combine the following:
- 1 ¾ cup water
- ¼ cup white vinegar
- 10 drops Eucalyptus essential oil
- 10 drops Peppermint or Tea Tree essential oil
- 8 drops Citrus essential oil of your choice
Combine, shake well and spray generously. I’ll usually allow it to sit on the surface a couple minutes before wiping down but it’s not required.
Bathroom Cleaner #2
This recipe forms a powerful and effective cleaner that is ideal for disinfecting toilets and basins.
- 1 ¾ cup warm water
- ¼ cup white vinegar
- 15 drops Tea Tree essential oil
- 10 drops Lemon essential oil
- 10 drops doTerra OnGuard blend (or other disinfecting essential oil of your choice)
Note: The essential oils in this recipe can be combined with 1 cup baking soda and 1-2 tablespoon of water to form a paste that is amazing for scrubbing toilet bowls. Break up any clumps and store in a glass jar. This recipe can be harsh on the skin, I recommend wearing gloves.
Dusting Spray
I love everything about this spray! Not only is it great for dusting furniture, baseboards and banisters it is a wonderful aromatic. Plus, it doesn’t leave behind any strange residue and is safe for even wood. Hands down the best dusting spray you’ll find.
In a 16oz glass spray bottle combine the following:
- 1 cup distilled water
- ½ cup white vinegar
- ¼ cup of carrier oil (I prefer fractionated coconut but could also use sweet almond or olive oil)
- 10 drops Lavender essential oil
- 5 drops Grapefruit essential oil
- 5 drops Lemon essential oil
- 3 drops Cinnamon Bark essential oil
Shake well and lightly spray furniture or cloth, wipe clean. A light mist is all that’s needed.
Note: Because oil and water do not mix well, it’s important to shake well and often while using.
Kitchen Cleaner #1
This blend is a powerful anti-microbial and beautifully cleans kitchen countertops, trash cans and inside the refrigerator. I love the clean, fresh scent it leaves behind.
In a glass spray bottle combine the following:
Equal parts of white vinegar and warm water
- 4 drops Peppermint essential oil
- 3 drops Lemon or Lime essential oil
- 2 drops Lavender essential oil
Shake well. Spray, wipe and allow to air dry.
Kitchen Cleaner #2
Appliances need extra special care and this is the perfect recipe for cleaning your oven, microwave, toaster etc.
In a glass spray bottle combine the following:
- ½ cup white vinegar
- ½ cup water
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional)
- ½ cup vodka or rubbing alcohol
- 6 drops Wild Orange essential oil
- 4 drops Lemon essential oil
- 2 drops Clove essential oil
Shake well, spray and wipe clean.
Fabric Refresher Spray
Better than store-bought fabric refreshers this blend is fantastic for freshening carpets, fabrics and upholstery and is super easy to make. I especially like to use on curtains, throw pillows, robes etc.
In a small spray bottle combine the following:
- ½ cup water
- ¼ cup vodka or rubbing alcohol
- 5 drops of Lavender essential oil
- 5 drops of any Citrus essential oil you choose
Shake well, spritz onto fabric and allow to dry completely.
Note: I’ve used this recipe on a variety of fabrics without any problems but I am careful with any new materials. If you’re concerned about the water content I recommend testing on a small area first.
Room Spray #1
Room sprays make a nice alternative to diffusers, make great gifts, and are a wonderful way to welcome spring while ridding the home of any lingering odors or stuffiness that winter can leave behind. This room spray blend does a great job eliminating stale odors and will really freshen up the space.
In a 4oz glass spray bottle combine the following:
- 2 ounces water
- 1 ounce vodka or witch hazel
- 10 drops Lemon or Lime essential oils
- 7 drops Wintergreen essential oil
- 5 drops each of Lemongrass and Arborvitae essential oils
Shake well and spritz as little or lot as you like.
Room Spray #2
This room spray blend is my personal favorite and I’m excited to share it with you. The aroma of this blend is beautiful, cheerful and really does instill a sense of joy and laughter throughout the entire house. It’s my happy family blend; but it also deodorizes the air and can remove lingering odors. The perfect way to freshen up the home.
In a 4oz glass spray bottle combine the following:
- 8 drops Grapefruit essential oil
- 6 drops each of Bergamot and Lime essential oils
- 4 drops Hawaiian Sandalwood essential oil
- 2 drops Cassia essential oil
Shake well and spritz.
Although these essential oil sprays are my best for spring cleaning, they really can be used any time of the year. I hope you get a lot of use out of them and enjoy making them just as much as I do. They can’t clean that house for you but they can make it just a tad more enjoyable.

I hadn't thought of using them this way. I tend to think of them being used for emotional or mental well-being, but obviously they have a lot of uses.

We typically do NOT use any scented products at all in our home. Its a challenge.
We were told not to from moms oncologist.
Not sure if people know the cancer dangers therein.

It's always best to talk to your doctor. That said, as someone who is sensitive to scented products and only uses natural ones like essential oils I don't see them as in the same category as scented products with synthetic ingredients. It's also important to ensure you use a quality essential oil as some have synthetic ingredients and don't disclose it. Always start with a minimal amount to test out. Again though always consult your doctor first when it comes to interactions with medications and medical conditions. I would be surprised if they said no to essential oils, lavender especially is usually one that the majority of people can use in the home and it has some great antibacterial qualities.

I do make some of my own cleaners. I am planning to try a couple of these recipes, especially the window cleaner.
This is a great article. I only use natural cleaning products, and have most of these oils already on hand. I could certainly use some spring cleaning, as our home is getting cluttered and also quite dusty. Also, there are a lot of fingerprints from my daughters on the windows. I laughed when I saw vodka as an ingredient. I can use it for cleaning and drink a little while I'm cleaning.

These are so helpful as I already try to use non toxic cleaners but have never tried to make my own. Hate the idea of all the chemicals being around my pets and grandkids so this is a good alternative.
