My Quilt, My Story
There are so many reasons to have a memory quilt made. First and foremost is it's much quicker and simpler to have it made professionally for you so you don't have to do it yourself. Unless you know how to quilt, then you're probably all good. I got a twin sized quilt with 12" by 12" squares. You must provide 24 squares. All you have to do it cut the front of the shirt from the back. Memory Stitch will do the rest. The theme I chose to go with was my theatre/ drama career growing up. I was a legitimate theatre brat. It was my home away from home. I had tons of shirts from shows and events and I had enough to make the blanket. I never wore these shirts, truthfully, many just weren't my "style" though they were all very special to me. Because the memories associated with each one is special.
So I included all my theatre shirts and shirts from Mock Trial in high school because I always played a witness. Each show and each Mock Trial shirt has a story. Or more than one. They show my transition from mere theatre brat to the director of my own show. The hoodies prove that my performances helped to earn two state titles and a 3rd and 2nd place at Mock Trial Nationals. They honor my parents for having brought me up in such an artistic and wonderful life. And that is how I chose to make my Memory Stitch quilt Mine.
The Work on My End
I simply put in my order and then I got instructions on how to cut my shirt and send them in. It was very clear and super simple. I will admit, the toughest part of getting this quilt made was cutting up the shirts for it. And not because it was time-consuming or difficult, it wasn't. It was physically cutting up these shirts that meant so much to me. Some shirts are older than I am and had belonged to my mom or dad and shows they did. The shirt with 'Amadeus' on it was my dads when he was my age I think. It was also the singularly most comfortable shirt I owned. 40+ years will do that to a shirt. But I decided it was time. I put my trust in Memory Stitch to do their very best with my precious shirts, so I broke out the fabric scissors and cut them as needed.
I even added a couple of sleeves that had printing on them. Those were barely the required ½ inch bigger than the panel size, but once I got the quilt back, it's clear they made them work. I was also nervous because I had everything from thin t-shirts, to thick hoodies. It was one of the main reasons I never did a quilt myself and the thought of dealing with all the different thicknesses was migraine inducing.
So Many Choices
The great thing about this service is the number of choices you have. You can choose anything from a lap blanket to a king sized. You can choose if you want smaller 8-inch panels for baby clothes or 12 or 14-inch panels for bigger shirts. All the quilts are backed in that super soft minky fabric and you can choose from 7 different colors. Once you have your shirts cut, you can figure out your very own layout for them if you want! Simply indicate the layout on a sheet of paper included with your shirts when you send everything in. Once you send it in, they will honor your layout. If they can't for some reason, they will contact you before moving any further.
I left the layout to them and only mentioned that so long as the image and/or text was visible in the panel, I was happy. One shirt was a bit weird with a zipper in the middle, and they contacted me regarding that since the image was by the zipper. I reiterated that as long as the image was in the panel, I was happy. They ended up having enough fabric for a panel and simply cut and sewed the image onto that panel, it was perfect.
Quality and Comfort no Matter Your Quilt
I could not be more pleased. My quilt turned out so well. It's warm and soft and I love it. There are so many reasons to have a quilt made. I know people who've lost a loved one and they had a quilt made out of their loved one's clothes. It's a way to clear out the closet, but keep them close and the memory of them strong. Try making one with old baby clothes. I made my oldest a special shirt each of his birthdays growing up and combining those with my favorites of his baby clothes would be an amazing heirloom to hand down. I know people that had enough stuff from school that have a school themed quilt made. So gather up your favorite shirts that you really don't need or wear anymore and have Memory Stitch turn them into an amazing quilt. They will be in good hands, truly.
